Wondering what low level Horde units to add. I was thinking of a base level spearmen or Nubian so that they have some weak anti-cav for heavy cav. After all, nearly anyone can be taught to use a spear and these are roughly peasant level. Considering a second foot warrior unit with armour piercing missiles (either that or allow them to have crossbowmen, but not arbalesters.) I don't want to change the flavor of the Horde too much and want them to rely on cav archers, but they are pretty neglected as things stand. So my thought is to keep them mobile, but with a few options for low level defensive troops as well.

Also wonder if I should eliminate Khwarazmian heavy cav as a choice for them. Other than naptha throwers, what gunpowder/cannon should they be allowed? I can see restricting them somewhat, but giving them at least other simple siege weapons like catapults.

I need to take a look at Orda's mod...

Ideas, particularly with a historic bent, are appreciated

The only historically accurate unit from MTW i think would be naptha throwers. Other than that, if u r looking for low-levels infantry, u can refer to those 2 korean units from STW-MI. It would be nice if u can mode those 2 into MTW...

Big mistake to take away Khwarazmian cav from the Mongols. The Mongols defeated the Khwarazmian empire prior to invading Persia and eastern Europe and as with other conquered peoples simply added those local troops to the horde.

I do not know if the Mongols had access to advanced non-gunpowder artillery such as mangonels or trebuchets but they were notoriously eager to adopt new weapons technology from the people they conquered. Historically speaking, the Mongols were also known to recruit local engineers and craftsmen who could make such weapons.

With regard to cannons you're probably better off limiting the Mongols to the earliest and simplest cannons like Bombards or Mortars.

the mongols brought cannons with them from china that is,so modding a chinese cannon would be cool.

I removed Khwarazmian Cav because Mongol heavy Cav got about the same stats. Also I added ordinary Spearmen and Bulgarian brigands to the Golden Horde (those brigands have Longbows with me MoD). Thats about all the horde needs ... maybe change some basic units tht can be recruited by catholic/orthodox/muslim factions ... so that Golden Horde (Pagan) can build them too ..... ie. Kerns.

So far you are all coming up with the same basic ideas I was headed toward:

    1. Khwarazmian, I'll probably keep them since it sounds like it was historically accurate to have them. Thing I noticed was that they are nearly redundant with Mongol Heavy Cav--you get them with the same upgrades. However, they are considerably cheaper (although their stats are a little lower.)
    2. Basic spearmen make sense.
    3. Cannons, probably only allow the early types.
    4. Other siege equipment, probably limit to catapults. I know that the Mongols used local engineers and such, but their style was blitzkrieg with occasional sieges as best I understand.
