Well, just checking about alans, apparently they were quite common during the medieval period.
Well they are fine, but they shouldn't be available in Spain or England. They were mostly used by Byzantines and Eastern Europeans as mercenary horseman.

They're fine, but like the Turcopoles, Almughavars, and other unique mercanaries they should be restricted to certain areas. Namely the Balkans, the lowers Steppe, along with Hungary and Carpathia.

"Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?"
-Abraham Lincoln
Four stage strategy from Yes, Minister:
Stage one we say nothing is going to happen.
Stage two, we say something may be about to happen, but we should do nothing about it.
Stage three, we say that maybe we should do something about it, but there's nothing we can do.
Stage four, we say maybe there was something we could have done, but it's too late now.
The increased support costs hurt them a bit. That and they cost more when they have upgrades. I'm thinking of limiting them more by region but having more of them available for hiring.
It's also silly having them and Italian infantry and other such units revolt anywhere on the map including places where they've never been before. I've had Portugal revolt with lots of Italian infantry two turns into the game.
