My first campaign was played as the English and I always had a fairly high influence rating (that only improved when I took more provinces and went on the odd crusade against the Almohads)

I'm now playing as the HRE, and My influence was pitiful, after massive conquests all around (Eastern France, Denmark, Northern Italy, Poland all the way up to Finland) I got a high influence.

This all changed when my Emperor died and his successor had terrible influence (strange given I have such a large Sprawling empire)

Do the Germans ever gain respect?

The influence vary from ruler to ruler. A son do not inherit his father's influence. The new ruler must prove himself worthy, before he get a high influence.

So the size of the Empire never has anything to do with it? Strange, I thought it would have a great deal to do with how respected you'd be

I guess that this influence thingy is a bit of a mystery how it works.

I think it counts a bit. But it can possibly also have something to do with the age, and commandstars, of the ruler. Logically, a young ruler should have less initial influence, as the more senior rulers and leaders wouldn't have much respect for the person. Due to lack of experience on his behalf.

Defeating opponents, wiping out a line, successful crusade will all help influence.

Not to sure if getting the best of events help as well.

Like Mightest Army, Largest Income, Most Advanced, Happiest (would make sense that these do, as they show you are the regions leader).

What I do know is that a successful crusade will garner one influence.

Gaining provences in other means will also help (not sure if it is 1:1 or more and effected by difficulty level etc).
Our genes maybe in the basement but it does not stop us chosing our point of view from the top.

If you're warring constantly, your influence will stay high enough to ensure the loyalty of most of your troops, which is all that matters. It's the main effect of influence, in my opinion, despite what it says in the description.

i've had kings with 9 influence, but their son always drops it down to 5 everytime when they are crowned.
Obivously nobody is that concerned with a young king who is still going through puberty.
I usually find the influence so piles back up, even without large amounts of conquest.
