    Angry

From the beginning of warfare(that is-when a gorilla found another way of using a bone ),there is one interesting post-battle...thing: a crime of passion.I say interesting 'cause it seems keeping in intensity even today when we all are (allegedly)civisized.
The crime of passion occurs immediately after battle when the emotions are still on animal(?)level, and hunger of vengeance is all that exists in the soldiers minds. It often manifests as spontaneous lining up and shoting of captured soldiers, torturing the wounded, shooting of local civilians,raping...
It is a crime that is recognised by UN,is considered an atrocity, but treated in a lesser manner than most war atrocities.

    Is Crime of passion acceptable?
Does it takes 1000 years more so that we over-evolve it?
Can it be prevented in the first place?
Would you as a commander permit it?(Don't tell me you've never pressed the kill prisonersbutton in the chaos of battle

Very good question Macedon. Unfortunately, my brain is grinding gears thinking about this one. Maybe later.

Here is a thought to kick off the discussion: I think the more disciplined/trained the soldiers are, the less likely you'll have crimes of passion. Commanders can turn off the aggressive behaviour easier when the soldiers are highly trained. Of course, the commander has to want to stop the soldiers from commiting such horrible crimes.

Doubters on that idea Gregoshi. The biggest embarassment here in Canada came from our best of the best in Rwanda

I would have to agree with Gregoshi highly trained and better disciplined troops are less likey to behave in such a way. But it is the commanders job to keep his troops inline.

Ah, but who keeps the officers in line?

I would agree that training can help in controlling the mob/rape/pillage mentality that can overtake mankind. I would contend that the better trained soldier probably suffers fewer casualties than an untrained counter-part, so therefore arrives at victory in a better mood. As to evolving into some Star Trek like mentality where evryone becomes a Jean Luc Picard...don't you believe it Hormones are a difficult thing to control, just ask the Columbine anti-depressant drug crazed kids.

The commanders are key. They are not directly involved in the actual combat so much anymore, so they don't have the killing frenzy mentality to deal with. They can keep their heads better, assuming their heads are on straight to begin with.
