Last night I started my first SP campaign as the Polish faction in the late period, expert setting, domination. Usually, I am at war with the world, but I figured playing Poland would challenge me to use diplomacy and agents instead of primarily the sword to build my empire.

All was going well and I expanded slowly from 2 provinces to 5, including Sweden, while my neighbors grew powerful warring against each other. All but the horde were my ally and the Danish have them more than occupied at the moment. When England and Hungary both attacked the HRE, I moved in to get some scraps (2 provinces), then quickly bargained a ceasefire with the HRE, who graciously complied - having their hands full with 2 larger opponents and being down to three provinces.

My problem is that it is already 1410 and now the nations around me are quite strong with huge armies. I can not affored a huge army depsite having a wide trade network from Sweden, my only province on the sea. All of my provinces require a strong garrison because each borders another factions province and judging by my 'allies' troop buildup along my borders, they might take advantage of easy pickings. I have been biding my time hoping to take advantage of another neighbor's misfortunes, like the HRE or perhaps a civil war, but it's not happening and my current nieghbors - England, Hungary and the Danish are quite strong. The horde is losing to the Danes. The horde still has one nation at my border -Moldavia, but there is several thousand troops there (as if they know my designs). If I stretch my garrisons thin I can muster maybe half their number and it'll be mostly Halbrediers and Royal Knights vs the usual horde troops. My allies the Danes and English block me from the sea to the north and west and they are 2 of the three strongest empires right now. I am pretty sure Hungary could kick my butt too plus their provinces are all land-locked like mine. Naturally, an attack by me on any of those three will result in every other nation breaking their alliance with me. The Danes have the most attractive territory, so I am thinking I might attack, despite their saving me from the horde - being a King is an ungrategul business, we must always place the ultimate good of our nation above personal loyalties. or perhaps steal one of the last pieces of the HRE - but those provinces are landlocked and would require strong garrisons to discourage invasion by other factions.

After some selective heir grooming, I finally have a half decent king (man, Poland gets no breaks&#33. My cash flow (about 700 florins) and reserves (about 2000 florins) are tight. I can produce good troops, but in short supply. Any ideas on how I turn this campaign around or is it too late?

I like your Danish invasion gambit best; for me, when in doubt: go to the sea You've got 43 years left, but a cashflow problem coming soon. Hopefully, your pal the Dane won't decimate his land before you've taken it. Taking Denmark opens the door to britain, what remains of HRE, and the Ruski coastals. Down side: the Pope. So only go to Copenhagen if you take it in 2 years.

If that's too risky, look to the east. Less $$$ but less of a gamble.

Good luck m8. Let us know how it turns out.

Well, we know how it was in real life: not so easy for Poles at all. I was planning to play as Poland this time, but chickened out: I need more experience. I decided to play Italians instead...

    Good Luck though

might not win? well sometimes that's how the game goes.

if you're afraind you'll eventually be invaded and overwhelmed, keep in mind you'll be defending which is always easy, and hopefully you're a skilled enough player to weather whatever comes; you also didn't mention the quality of your neighboring armies (a big army of peasants isn't so much to be worried about) or your own soldiers (having three full stacks of mostly peasants isn't the basis for a good defense)

i'd be interested in seeing what this campaign is all about, can you email me the saved game from 1410?

ouch, sounds like a long road ahead of you there. My best option would be lto attack one of your neighbouring allies while they are engaged in another war, try snap up some fast territory while you can. If you had more years, then i would suggest biding your time, but obviously thats not an option... well tell us how it goes, im looking forward to hearing the response

It is there (patched game, no mods). I have finals the next couple days, so I'll be taking a run at it on Thursday. My ultimate target is the Danes because they block me from the sea and they divide my empire, however I remembered that their navy will disrupt my trade routes and put me deep in the red (I left out this little detail before) So I think I need to build more ships first, get some money in reserve or target their Royal Line in my initial attack (a big gamble)

My troops in my landlocked portion of the empire are high quality - mostly Halbrediers, Royal Knights, Retainers and arbalesters with some others. Sweden is still the original peasent rabble I bribed (with a 5 star peasent leader) and a couple FMAA, the best I can train there. My potential adversaries' troops are similar to mine but with more peasent troops mixed in and the Horde is the usual horde troops. I am thinking my heavily armoured troops are capable of beating the superior numbers of the Horde archer troops and battling the dwindling Horde doesn't threaten any of my alliances. Unfortunately, it won't unite my empire or get me any provs not bordering another faction - so I'll have to heavily garrison whatever I take. Maybe I will take some of their provs and get some quick conquest money for my upcoming war with the Danes.

Thanks everyone for the feedback so far I'll be sure to post how the campaign plays out.

Interesting side notes: - the loyalty of Polish leaders is awful on average (2-3) - Hungary is quite anxious to marry their princesses to my line, I think its their way of getting a claim to some scraps of my tiny empire or else they're just really good friends

so it is possible to upload files to this site?? COOL
what kind of stuff can i upload? are there any limits?
i have truckloads of stuff i want to share, mods, battles, savegames, especially the one i managed to get a 1-man army, it was an ex-prince, in a units of swiss armoured pikemen, he is specialist in attacking and defending, skilled in attacking and defending when outnumbered, a murderer (+5 valour) and has virtues that give + morale and health, has 9 stars and best armour, in battle he has 19 valour this guy ALONE defeated armies as big as 2000 men (the secret is using auto-resolve so archers cant kill him), dozens of times, i only lost when i got cocky and sent him alone against 6000 bizantines (oh, btw the units size is small in this game&#33
i lost, then i quit immediately, pissed off, but the auto-save should be there...

Poland was not the most Glorious Empire in 1453.

I attacked the mongols in Moldaiva and then the Danes attacked me I defeated them both and took all their provinces except the Danes in Scotland. I held everything east of Poland and north of the Balck Sea, plus Bulgaria and a few of the HRE's provs. In 1445, the Mongols reimmerged in Khazar and a couple provinces, that was the coup de grace in my ultimate defeat. After diverting my troops to handle the surprise insurrection from inside my empire, time ran out. Spain had amassed a huge empire in the south. It was a good showing I feel, but still a bitter defeat in the end...

I will try again from scratch, the sit back/diplomacy strategy did not work in the late period. I was everyone's friend, but waited too long to make my move

It was interesting to have the clock as a factor in the game.

The polish start at very difficult position, the HRE and French are not easy nation to mess with.Beside Danes couldn't start crusade, even if HRE and French got excommunicate...
