There's Jeanne d'Arc. The battle scenes are great but the highlights are Jeanne's battle rages.
well gladiator, sparticus
Expect The Unexpected.
Go tell the Spartans, Stranger walking by, That here, Obedient to their laws, we lie. - King Xerxes
I know its slightly earlier with the viking element but The 13th warrior is an awesome film, also check out 1492:conquest of paradise, which is also good and Henry V with Kenneth Brannagh is very good.
Last of all there is a wickedly gory film set in the religious wars in france during the 16th century called La Reine Margot which i seriously recommend and why not see Elizabeth with Kate Blanchett. I know there out of the medieval bracket but they are still worth seeing.
There is another topic regarding movies somewhere... Highly ranked were Alexandre Nevsky, Vikings, El Cid, etc, etc...
I forgot about Henry V. Does qualify as a good one. Have to disagree on Braveheart and Jeanne d'Arc... Will explain why later...
Louis,
As long as your not looking for historical accuracy I think their are a lot of decent medieval themed movies out there.
I am just going to list a bunch, even ones that have already been mentioned![]()
Braveheart
Henry the V
Hamlet
13th Warrior
A Knights Tale
Excaliber
The Princess Bride
Robin Hood Prince of Thieves
Ivanhoe
First Knight
The Name of the Rose
All you can do is pray for a quick death... which you ain't gonna get -Mr. Blonde

Thank you Yellow, I'm glad u finally acknowledge that fact m8y, lol.
Well, I am sure all of you aware of the disgraceful inaccuracies in Braveheart and Ivanhoe, esp Braveheart - damn Scots (j/k Yellow).
El Cid is fantastic, long, but believe me you won't notice the time fly by.
The Lion in Winter - absolutely magnificent, described as Probably the greatest of all medieval movies. For sheer enjoyment.
The Man in the Iron Mask - quite good.
The Vikings - with Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis is really good, (try and spot the guy in the rowing boat wearing a gold wristwatch).
Oh, and I almost forgot Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail.
Believe me, I do other things apart from watch films, honest, I swear, what, what, stop looking at me like that
The eagle looked down and saw that the arrow had been made with one of his own wings. Often we give our enemies the means of our own destruction.
Well I really enjoyed Rob Roy
For a great Monthy Python medieval flick, try Jabberwocky![]()
Creole,
I am offended by your use of the symbol, as it is an obvious attempt to draw me into a debate over inflatable girlfriend dolls which have a face similar to
(so i hear) but are white, or ebony, or shade J-Lo, yet you seem to choose red, which is a direct insult to my heritage and therefore if you do not stop I just might have you fired for baiting.

Er, Creole, Dump is kidding around. He's on a crusade to be offended everything. Once he reads this post, I'm sure he'll be offended by my use of bold type - or maybe even normal type. Or maybe my use of the hyphen.
I recently saw First Knight. Ever since then, whenever the words first and knight are in close proximity to each other like the are now, I want to vomit...excuse me, got to go.
I was greatly disappointed in Jabberwocky. It was a bit too gory compared to other MP stuff. I only remember laughing at two parts of the movie. The knights playing hide and seek was classic. The other was the King to his daughter You can live in the East Tower....
Henry V was a very good movie. Strange in parts with the narrarator.

I know it was Shakespear (spelling!. I can see those parts working on stage but they felt out of place in the movie.
You are 100% correct about the We few, we happy few speech at Agincourt. That has to rank as one of my all-time best movie scenes. I was so pumped up after the speech, that I would have dove into the TV screen and joined the English if it had been possible. The strange part of it was that at the time I saw it, I couldn't understand most of the words (old English + accent). But Kenneth Branaugh's acting was so brilliant, that though I didn't understand the words, I did understand the message. A very powerful scene indeed.

GREGOSHI watched FIRST KNIGHT hahahahahah
Did your penis retract into your body afterwards????![]()
I recommend BLACK KNIGHT. It is a very realistic portrayal of what happened in medieval times when the occasional black man of the 21st century hit a time warp and showed up at the castle steps. It's highly original. Movies like that have just never been made before. Whats next? A movie with dinosaurs? Where would they ever find dinosaurs? This world is crazy

Yes Dump, I saw First Knight. I was up late and turned on the TV for some background noise (I was probably cruising these forums). I saw that it was on and foolishly decided to see if it was as bad as I had heard. What a waste of Sean Connery's talents.

Do you people know Flesh & Blood? The movie is a bit forgotten and not available DVD. Rutger Hauer plays the main part and, like all movies directed by Paul Verhoeven, it is very violent.
If want to know more, look here:
http://www.amazon.com/exec....details
This is one of the buyer reviews:
I can't recommend this film highly enough. Rutger Hauer plays soldier Martin, a mercenery in the employ of Count Arnolfini who lays siege to a fortified town somewhere in Europe 1520. He and his band are a motley crew including a deranged cardinal of the church who are betrayed by their former paymaster. The film is one of Paul Verhoeven's finest and quite gory but which is nevertheless lifted by moments of great hilarity as when 'the gang' adopt Saint Martin as their patron. All their subsequent 'decisions' are made on the basis of signs received from a statue of the saint that only the cardinal and soldier Martin seem able to comprehend. Add to this the appearance of Jennifer Jason Leigh as Agnes and Steven the count's son, and the story leads you on an adventure involving kidnapping, pillage and frequent killings. The soundtrack by Basil Poledouris who also composed the score for Conan The Barbarian, is simply breathtaking. In the composer's own words Martin is a noble character, despite the courseness his profession would seem to suggest. The music successfully evokes the sense of adventure and swashbuckle that are the hallmarks of a great story. Enjoy the film.
Have you guys seen the traielr yet for Timeline? Looks liek it might have some good battle sceens.

I'm telling you, Black Knight is soooooooooo good it will make you take a step backwards and re-evaluate your life.

I have Showgirls on DVD and I have the soundtrack and I have the dime novel version and the collectible trading card game and all 16 of the cartoon episodes, thank you very much Papewaio I re-evaluated my life a long time ago when the movie first came out.
I was so excited that I did like the vampire dork-goth-kids do for vampire movies....I went on opening night dressed as a stripper...my name was Sinnamon.
It's just that Black Knight made me re-re-evaluate my life as its message was so heartwarming and acutely surreal. I had to watch it 4 times just to understand the whole concept, and every time I found something new.
And, Gregoshi, nice try with the First Knight story. Rumor has it you went to the video store to rent it, and then stormed out when they said it was already rented. You special ordered the Special Edition DVD with rush delivery. At least thats what I heard.....

Some from the 50`s and 60`s......there was the story of El Cid.....for STW was the 1960`s `SEVEN SAMURAI`....upon which the Spaghetti Westerns were based.....

Anyone else seen Roman Polanski's Macbeth?
There's a great bit in the aftermath of battle at the start, where Macbeth and his mates wander round kicking all the dead bodies of enemies. If they groan or flinch they get a ball and chain on the head (hard)
Top story too (yes Yellow, I know it's Bill)
Give me a lever of infinite length and an immovable place to stand, and I will move the Earth
There's also The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc a film by Luc Besson and starring his girlfriend at the time, Milla Jovovich. Not a terrible film, not a great film, but if you're looking for battle scenes it's got some good ones - including use of a trebuchet.
Similar to the life-affirming effect of Black Knight, I found that Army of Darkness took a critical, introspective look at how modern man would confront the problems dealing with evil undead that medieval cultures had to face. Shop smart, shop S-Mart![]()
I liked Braveheart because it had enough romance to take a date to, but also realistically portrayed the use of military picks (I can get over the historical inaccuracies). Although not really a medieval film , I also liked the movie Highlander, mostly for the bad guy, and the gratuitous (sp?) beheadings.
