Is there THE best army? I don't think that one with all WM is the best army. I like balanced armies.

    So, which is your favourite?

The best army is one that you are used to, one that you can keep control of even in the most confusing melees. This of course varies from person to person depending on playing style and their abilities. Of course other armies may be more fun in someways (like all cavalry) but with regards to competitive games a balanced force is essential. I have seen players choose armies with no missile units and be shot to ribbons, take no cavalry and be out-manoevered or even take no defensive units and be torn apart in a counter-attack. As far as unit selection goes it is easiest to use assault troops (monks etc) and most difficult to use cavalry successfully but no units should be used without the support of the other types. STW is after all a scissors-paper-stone type of game.. That is my opinion anyway.

I have a fairly similar selection of troops for most situations. I like to use Yari Samurai a lot, though from analysing my log files I see that they are perhaps not as successful as they appear.

I tend to take only a few dedicated attacking troops (monks, No-Dachi), usually no more than 6 units. I try to make the most of these by using them in flanking attacks. The rest are normally mostly Yari Sam, missile units and often a unit of Yari Cav to keep Cav Archers off my back.

You go with more horses than me, but we're pretty close. I also prefer YA over YS since I can up their honor.

Just when I think I've found the "ultimate force", I start using another I like better.

I'm one of those guys who ruin a fun question like this by saying, "it depends on the (player's style; situation; opponent; map; season -- fill in the blank)."

    But some generalities:
    * at least one cavalry unit. If one unit, YC or CA.
    * a rule of thumb: at least one yari for each missile unit.
    * few, if any, naginatas when attacker (slow, tire quickly)
    * at least one gun unit (to keep constant fire)
    * rarely less than two SA units
    * I vary the numbers of Monks and No-Dachis a lot. Rarely more than two monk units.
    * numbers of cavalry, Monks, and No-Dachi directly related to amount of trees and hills on the map.

16 muskets is the way to go. Teppu Ashigaru charges are among the bloodiest.

Notice I said bloodiest but did not said whose blood.

    Why does everybody like muskets??
I don't use them. (Is that a mistake?) And I don't like facing them.
I like lots of archers. And YC for flanking. But I don't have a favourite army yet. (Too few battles)
Is an all cavalry army very difficult? I'll like to try that once.

Muskets are much cheaper than archers and have more ammo, thus last longer if used correctly. Plus they can rout low-honour units incredibly easily.

    BlackShip,

As archers I use cavalry archers. They are fast, beat the infantry archers and can help in melee.

I find that 16 honor 0 arquebusiers constitutes an army that brings about profuse bleeding. The secret to their success is to make them fire several volleys into each other as motivation before taking on the enemy. If you forget to do this, they will quickly break rank because they have not been inspired by their general to die well. I have never lost with this army/tactic, even in the rain against monks and heavy cav!

I have tested this on the battlefield Hirosito.

Yes, Cavalry archers beat their infantry brethren.

Do you mean in hand-to-hand or at range?

Surely SA beat CA due to the fact that horses are bigger targets than people?

    Tera,

While I agree that samurai archers can't beat cavalry archers in hand-to-hand combat, they do quite well fighting every other non-hoofed unit! And the foot archers will just tear the horses a new one too if well supported!

The key is to make sure you cover yourself with a liberal sprinkling of all units. If you just bring paper to a rock-scissors-paper fight you're gonna lose

Unless of course your opponent has a rock fetish

Cavalry archers and arquebusiers are the only unit I pretty much never use. Don't use Heavy Cav much either. But my armies usually consist of a mix of the other units.

I'm trying to improve my No-Dachi tactics at the moment, to get me off my monk dependency

    It's ok Hirosito.

And rob, No-Dachi are warrior monks without the stellar defense value. In attack, they use the same tactics.

And use ND because they are also 200K cheaper.

I have heard that WM are no longer as good at attacking. WM and No-Dachi both used to have identical attack ratings, but monks are now slightly lower.

This has not been officially confirmed, so I can't say for certain.

    Don't know.

I don't think so, but like I said I don't know for certain the monks have been tweaked, it's only something I heard (and I can't even remember where ). But my playing experience seems to confirm it, so I believe it's true.
