Here are a few things that will make the troop morale drop:

If your troops see alot of theyr dead comrades on the ground.
If your men are being killed in a very rapid time(the worst I think).
The sight of other allied troops running away.
Being flanked or ambushed from the back by cavalry.
The sight of your general running away.
    The death of your general.
The sight of massive enemy troops charging.
    Being outnumbered.

BTW the sight of fleeing ashigaru troops doesnt affect samurai much.
However, this doesnt apply the other way around.

    Hope this helps

I think that the MI has a more accurate system than the original Shogun.

    What do you mean?

MI is accurate when flanking and rearing is useless? MI is accurate when men don't run until they're all dead? MI accurate when men are not affected by the death of the general? (less effected - put it that way)

    But anyway

Shoko, the gun's real power is in it's gun scare It effects terribly morale of units being shot to. You ever seen units routing before even engaging in hand-to-hand combat begins when fired upon? That's the gun scare. The gun scare effects mainly units with low morale, such as yari ashigaru or yari samurai. But beware that shock troops like monks and no-dachi would die very quickly because of their low armour.

Rout of a general reduces morale by some, but many times you could rally. When your general dies, normally, the battle finishes there, unless you were winning easily and your general dies while winning, which happens.

There are manythings that effect morale. Units in wedge charging will deliver an attack bonus for the unit attacking and a relative penalty for the one attacked upon. (remove wedge after engaging in combat)

On the other hand, loose formation reduces the morale of that unit, that's one of the reasons muskets should be put always in close formation. Of course loose formation reduces hits by missiles but at the expense of morale.

Sight of allies/your men routing will reduce the morale all your troops too. When in a tight battle, normally a unit routs on one side, the others follow and the battle is finished.

Morale is extremely important in STW and you have to take all the advantages you can have. Morale management is one of the factors that decide the skill of a player. Unfortunately, morale is not that important in MI, that's why many say that "MI games are no skill".

There was a thread named "Games Features Information" by Takeshida.

That collected great info on the game. If you get to know them and use them, you will improve much more.

Just seeing what may have been forgotten:

Flags: if the enemy have high-honor troops, then they can scare aware lower-honor armies without even engaging!

Army Size: An outnumbered army is more likely to run away.

Position: Enemy behind you can scare you. If you don't have friends standing next to you, you get scared.

Formation: A disorganized unit (like one trying to turn around) has a penalty when attacked.

Proximity to General: If a unit can not see their general, they get nervous.

Discipline: (No, not that!) A Drill Dojo and Palaces will all affect morale and rally-ability. A unit made in the same province that has a palace gets an automatic morale bonus.

Orders: A unit that is constantly backing off from the enemy will eventually panic.

Guns: Nobody likes being shot at.

Corpses: Lots of dead friendlies will scare troops.

Fleeing Troops: If some men start to run, there is a good chance their neighbors will panic too. Fleeing ashigaru will only scare other ashigaru, but if they see samurai fleeing, they'll have second thoughts, themselves.

Loss of General: this will really frighten them. Good way to scare off an enemy force is to take out the leader. Especially if it is a high ranking general, because then his troops actually drop in honor when he dies!

Edge Of Screen: I don't know if this still has as much effect, but if you try to have your men camp out at any edge of the battle map, they don't like that.

Ashigaru: They panic easily, unless they have a high honor. But even then, samurai troops tend to last longer.

Battle Modifiers: Yes, those little guys are aware that fighting uphill sucks, and having archers fighting cavalry sucks, and all those other things. If you give them absurd orders (you archers charge up that hill after those monks!) they will turn tail and run.

There are other side effects, too, but that's all I can think of off-hand.
