It's the way you deal with each single unit, it's specific position and it's specific target, aim, formation, and use, depending on the particular situation you encounter.
In other words, fiddling with each unit so that you get the max from it, depending on the situation.
With micro-management you need to learn how to be flexible so that you can be successfull in all occasions.
Imagine a situation:
Yari sam straight ahead, immediately hold formation, and engage vs monks frontally. No-Dachi immediately marched v quickly in wedge formation and it goes behind the monk...on the other front you move muskets forward to shoot at his main units, and on the other side you make sure your units engage well. When you do all that stuff, the Nodachi would have reached behind the monk, rear the monk, close formation quick and quickly go to the other front to monitor the stuff...
