I havn't seen any threads to address this, but I wanted to let you guys know that if you have 10 units (an arbitrary number) in a province to defend, and 4 of them are placed in the fortress for retraining, you only have (6) units to fight if needed. Your drill students will not stop homework & final exams to help repel the invaders.

Yep. And not only that, if the region gets taken from you while there are guys in training, they get slaughtered to a man by the invading force rather than retreating out of the region or to a castle with the active armies.

So, try to avoid stacking up retraining units on your from lines.

I haven't tied retraining yet and I have a few questions. I have just captured an enemy province with a drill dojo intact. I guess I can start retraining.

    1) what does retraining really do?
    2) how do i go about it?
    3) what about upgrading armor and weapons? Is that retraining?

Retraining includes armour, swords, morale and discipline (drill dojo).

I think whoever is currently being retrained [the single unit who would be produced that turn] will help defend the province all others will remain in queue and die if the province is taken... good reason to have at least one unit retreat to the castle.
