I have never done retraining before.

    1) What does retraining do? Increase morale? Replenish troops? Increase Honor, Armor, Weaponry?

    2) What are the exact steps in retraining?

    Sigh....
1.Move your army to a province where you have your biuldings.
    2.End turn,wait 1 season.
    3.Click on the training menue.
    4.click on your army.
5.With your left mouse button click a selected unit, hold, and drag unit into the window at the bottum of the training menue.
    6.Close training menue.
    7.Done.

Your unit will be brought up to full strength.
Depending on what biuldings you have in that province, depends on what level of honor, armor.or weapons up grade you will recieve for your unit.

Yeah, what he said... I recommend setting up training shops in those specialty provinces: Kaga, Kii, Yamashiro, Totomi, Satsuma, ect. (AND) in at least one province that will support an armory & port. Once a major campaign is underway & things are going well for you, this should be easy to accomplish.

For instance, if you have a temple complex & legendary palace in Kaga, your monks will leave the training grounds at honor 3 with fantastic morale. Send them to say Hitachi, where there's a legendary armory, swordsmith & drill dojo, retrain them & place them in a rank 5 general's army, and you've got some deadly ass honor 5 armored Kaga monkeys.

Reversing the process works just as well. This is also nice in the end game where often a person has a good many surplus troops. You can decommission the superfluous troops & concentrate on high quality, well trained ones.

To clarify, click and drag the icon at the bottom of the screen, not the unit game piece on the strategy map, into the training box.

Another tidbit is the fact that in order to get upgrades for a unit, the retraining facility does not necessarily need to be able to create the unit being upgraded. For example, if you have a province with Legendary Armory, but no Horse Dojo, you can still move a cav unit into it, retrain them, and they will pop out with a lovely little gold shield. However, if they have taken any losses, those losses will not be replaced if the required building is not present.

I believe you have to have at least one unit training building in the province however... never tried it, but I know when you click Train in a province w/o any training buildings, it won't let you open the window. So you'd at least need a spear/archer dojo or something.
