I think Khan7 once mentioned that DEFENSE point determines the odd of surviving a melee attack, while ARMOR determines the odd of surviving a ranged attack.

At first, I thought it made great sense. Because I have always been wondering about what "defense" and "armor" really mean. However, it doesn't click when I actually looked at the unit armor class.

    Naginata: armor 1
    WM: armor 1
    ND: armor 1
    YS: armor 3
    YA: armor 2
    CA: armor 3
    YC: armor 3
    HC: armor 5
    ...

Based on this, naginata should drop like flies under arrows, just as ND and WM, while mounted units should be very resisitant to missle assault. It doesn't sound right at all.

I understand that mounted units might suffer extra penalty because of their size (man + horse), but what about Nag?

Gandalf used to hang out here too. But that was in the First Age of the dojo. I think he's gone off to the Undying Lands now.

Goth: Perhaps the Armour rating is ADDED to the Defense to protect against ranged attacks.

No no no, it appears there was a check or a balanced that was out to lunch somewhere here. I can verify that Gothmog's figure for the Nagis is incorrect, though I will not judge him on this, as we all mess up sometimes. But praytell, where DID you get those figures?? Everything is right according to my memory, except Nagis should be 5. Check again perhaps??

I have seen that Nags are listed as armor 1 from various of places.

    For instances, TotalWar Org:
    http://www.totalwar.org/strategy/bat...naginata.shtml

    And planet total war: http://www.planettotalwar.com/thesho...s_overview.htm

Again, I have always been having some doubt on those figures.

For instance, the walking speed of Naginata seems to be way slower than what's listed.

Yep, those figures are quite wrong. Armor should be five, Walking speed/Running speed should be 4/8. I dunno where they got their info.

Anyway, if you want *really* accurate info just check out your own TroopStats.txt file.

The mistake on Nag armor originated in the Shogun Strategy Guide, and has been getting propagated ever since.
