Thread: single player campaign help please

    hi..i finally bought the game last night... i read the game manual and did the campaign tutorial, but tutorial doesnt really show much how to play it, just the few basic only... and game manaul doesnt explain how to play it well.


    like i said i never played any of the total war series...Medeival total war is the first.


    if it isnt too much trouble..can someone explain step by step what to do...lets say i pick English....if i can have the steps i can follow it and get a better understanding what to do and then the game manual will make sense more to me when i read it again. appreciate it...

    Hi JB...

    First of all, don't take your first few campaigns too seriously... treat them as part of the learning process.

    You need to balance between earning income and having a flexible army, large enough to keep your enemies away and make your friends wary of attacking you...

    You start off with an emissary... send him off to visit all the other kings... trying to get alliances( drop him on the mounted knight army icon, that denotes where the king is... it should ask if you want to propose a ceasefire/alliance etc) Keep him moving because if he hangs around in a province to long he will be spying for you and assassins will try to kill him.

    Build upgrades to your farmland and forts etc... but try not to exceed your budget, you have to juggle between income generating upgrades eg farmland,trading posts, mines, ports and military upgrades.

    The English can sit at home for a while, taking over Wales and Scotland... after you conquer those areas you will need to maintain large armies in them to keep them loyal to you... if you build a fort in Scotland it will will give you access to Highland clansmen, a useful attacking unit.

    Best advice is just to play the game... come back here and ask all your questions each time something pops up that needs explaining... save your game frequently... and have fun

    I hope I can have time to explain my own English strategy in detail, eventually.

    Quik Tips:

    -Build the necessary infrastructure for Billmen and Longbowmen, which appear in the High Era. Use the tech tree.
    -Secure Wales and Scotland as soon as possible. Scotland is a good for Clansmen which are a cheap and effective early era unit.
    -Attack the French, enter from Flanders and head to Ile de France to destroy the majority of their troop production capacity, and acpture their capital.
    -Once France is English, eliminate Aragon and secure the Iron provinces of Northern Spain.
    -If you wish to develop a Crusader state then go for Antioch and Tripoli the most profitable lands on the map.

    And do not forget to build your navy: role play the British

    Interesting thing would be to try to back off from the main continent and sit on the island until High maybe, just to see what the AI would make of it. I have noticed that when I cut back on my conquest, most nations make it into the later eras, with some interesting and unexpected situations: like Spain taking over Eastern Europe and wiping out Russians, with its native lands being taken in turn by Almos

    IMHO, I would recommend starting with the Egyptians. They are in a great strategic position. You can easily eliminate the Almohads and Turks. During that time you can be learning some of the strategy and battle skills.

    After the Almohads and Turks are eliminated, you can begin creating a navy through which you can try to create trade income.

    During this time you can try to marry off daughters, create alliances with some of the Christian kings (though they usually come to you very early), bribe rebel provinces to your side.

    It will probably be a while before you can actually win the game by 100% ownership of provinces, but that is not the point. Part of the fun is learning new techniques and skills, getting on TotalWar.org to read posts and get ideas of things to try on your next campaign, trying to figure out what they did to set up the game's A.I., things like that.

    After you feel comfortable, you can try some of the harder factions.

    I find that if a game is too easy to win, I play it once and set it aside. MTW is a game you can keep on playing for quite a long time.

    Whoa, back up there.

    First of all, if you haven't played any TW games before, run through the tutorial. You have to get a solid grounding in the tactical mechanics of the real-time game.

    Once you do that, you're ready to start a campaign. I recommend Early, Easy, and before choosing the faction, read the description box; if it indicates it is a degree harder, choose a different one.

    Next, before you do ANYTHING else, get a small notebook and a pen, make sure the manual and tech tree are handy, and dive into the strategic game.

    Get a small notebook. One thing you'll surely write down is info from the tech tree if a province can produce something good that is a multi-building project. If an assassin goes overseas, make a note so you remember to bring him home and not leave him to die (you get a notice when he goes overseas, but may have to fight a battle elsewhere before you have control of the strategic game to move him, and might forget.) Maybe make a checklist of what you need to do, like checking revolt status, build, train, emissaries, etc.

    As far as priority of building, it depends. Towers on borders are immediate needs. Towers for catching spies later in the game will be indispensible. Agriculture early on, but if you need troop production more than money, maybe not. Just consider how long till the building is completed, that helps sort the priorities.

    For priority of conquest, it just all depends on the faction. I favor minimizing the number of provinces I have to defend above all else.
