No doubt EA should be doing a better job with the servers. And of course there is a future for online gaming. But I would not go so far as to say that online gaming is THE future, implying that solo play is winding down. It isn't. Only a small fraction of buyers ever play online.
For guys who play online exclusively it may seem like there is nothing else. But realistically, the technology is still a pain to deal with for too many people. Bandwidth issues, drops, lag, etc. Not to mention anonymous jerks who frequently plague any game you try to play by cheating or being rude and distasteful. Fans live with and except these problems as a regretable fact of life online because they enjoy it so much when it's working well (because THEN it IS great). But the hassles are still too commonplace to appeal to a massive market. Solo play will be alive and well for a long, long time.
