Newbie tech question

Hello,

First post for me.

I have the demo and love the game. I downloaded some of the demo mods and they are a gas to play, but my machine bogs down quite a bit on some of the bigger scenarios.

I have a Duron 1.2Ghz, 256 PC-133 and a GF4 Ti-4200 (128 megs).

The question is... are my specs up to spec? If the demo chugs at times, will I be watching a slideshow with the full game? Are their light and heavy versions of the in-game campaigns? Thanks.

Your PC specs are OK. I think that you need some tweaking and/or new drivers.

What Windows version you are using now?

Come to the Apothecary and read the pinned topics and some of the topics in game performance there.

Good. Glad the specs are ok. (Can always get beter though.)

I'm using Win98, DX9 and the 41.09 drivers. I don't have a killer system, but it runs most games well enough. Mostly flight sims. Is MTW more a CPU than a graphics hog? And is memory crucial in this game?

Looking forward to a long Mongol campaign. I'll be here for a while I'm sure. Thanks for getting back to me.

Your specs are just fine. I wouldn't exactly call MTW a resource hog but we have to remember that there are several hundred and sometimes thousands of individual sprites running around the battle field. There are several steps you can take to try and improve performance. It always helps to periodically run Scandisk and defrag the hard drive. Running the game with minimale detail and small or default unit size can have a great effect on game play. If all else fails try restarting your PC prior to playing to give your memory a quick flush and then open the Task Manager and close everything but Explorer and Systray. A lot of people are running Kazaa, three or four instant messenger programs, and an anti-virus utility in the background and never realize how much of a drain on system resources these simple things can be. I have an old Pentium III 700, and I have no problem with MTW:VI, other than loading up the freaking eras when starting a new campaign or custom game.
My video card is exactly the same as yours (G4 Ti4200), but I have more memory (384mb), so that may be it. If you can, nab yourself another 128mb memory chip if your computer can handle it. Now in the days of memory going up in the gigahertz, you can easily grab yourself a good memory chip for very cheap at newegg.com or other distribution sites.

Don't think its your system. I run MTW on an 850mz atahalon with Ti4400 for graphics and 512 ram...runs very nicely.

I installed directX 9 everything was still ok. The game bogged HUGE when I loaded the latest nvidia drivers; odd thing was MTW was the only program to do so. I reinstalled the 30.82 drivers and MTW works like a charm

Well I'm buying the game tomorrow and that's that. I foresee hundreds of hours of Mogolizing before me. And I look forward to frequenting the boards here. Looks like a good bunch of people.

I will grab some more memory soon. As for the drivers, I will keep the 41.09s because they work well for IL2-FB, my main flight sim. Mind you, I have heard that the new drivers are messing things up for some people. I'll have to refer to my tech-guru over at the Janes WWII Fighters site. Good bunch of guys and some no-nonsense tech advice.

Can't wait for my first rain-out day with no work. It's going to be good.

Don't worry about the demo, it was very slow on most machines. The game is better. I was playing MTW on a PII 350mHz machine (minimum specs) with an unsupported graphics card and I was fine. It is a matter of drivers and tweaking to get your machine to run MTW smoothly. If you have problems, check out the Nvidia tips in the Apothecary.
