Well, there is a difference probably between what people are running and what they think is the best
But I am running XP Home and I wouldn't want anything else (but I have to say I am not familiar with XP Pro).

Im running win2000. I find it the most stable of them all, and without the resource hogging of XP.

    Have Win ME (aka:Muddled Entirely)

Want XP home; as soon as the laptops get 3G proc's, 64 or 128 vidCards, DVD-RW drives & WiFi, all in one package later this year, I convert and rebuke ME

I was using 98se till I bought STW last week. Installed it and played it had a few problems with the graphics and set the options from the standard one it was using to the setting for my actual graphics card. Well that really messed it up with it only showing a black screen and the only way out was to reset each time.
Uninstalled, reinstalled nothing wored till i deleted the whole total war fiolder but by then the operating system had errors and kept crashing all the time. So took the opertunity to install my copy of XP home that id been putting off for ages. It works much better in XP not a single problem now.

Hi Celtlan welcome to the org

Glad to hear you got sorted out with STW.

I use XP pro myself, my impression is that it runs great so long as your prepared to spend the time tweaking it and keeping drivers etc. fully up to date. Far nicer than my old copies of 98SE and ME though.

I'm using WinXP Home and I've got to say that I like it after getting used to the changes from Win98. I've had it for about 2 months and the PC is turned on 16-18 hours a day and I may have had it lock up on me once.

Ever wonder exactly what all those services are in the XP task manager? Interested in finding out not only what each ones does but how to properly disable the ones you don't need and dramatically speed up performance in XP? Click below:

I'm running XP Home and have not had a problem. My only problems were with my graphics card. New card = no more problems.

    I'm running Win ME.

I am not very impressed with XP Pro though, at work we had two laptops waste their Hard Drives because of the constant accessing when running... I later found out this was because of the auto-recovery option.

Oh yeah and the XP Colours suck, I don't want my PC bars to look like a circus tent

I haven't seen XP Home yet, but for the most part I'm happy with what I have. (and I'd hate to give Microsoft any more money if I can help it)

    Cool

I am using WINXP Home with no probs as far as the many programs that are known to run behind XP . Kraellin has some good info on how to disable the lesser needed or unimportant utilities in the Apothecary under Windows Notes check it out under sub heading How to speed tweak WINXP

I am running both Win2000 sp3 and WinXp-pro and I must say I like the looks of XP but do not like its performance. I only have it on my computer for my .NET class at uni.
My every day choice is 2000 and I love the stability of it. When I get more time after exams (only three left), I’ll play around with XP.
Btw, both OS are very stable and I have yet to experience a crash or the need for reboot on any of them.

I have XP on two machines.....this one is mostly for the artwork and no problems with OS at all. Previously had 98 and ME and both were crap (IMHO).

My Primary gaming machine is a Win 98SE box, but I've run it on all but one of the M$ machines on my home LAN---Win98SE, XP Home & Pro, Win2K-workstation & Server. Didn't bother on my lone WinNT 4.0 (SP6a+ hotfixes) box--no ME it is crap, a beta release IMHO.

To bad MTW It isn't geared to run on Linux. (Mandrake 9.1)...

Oh..before you ask..11 computer running on my LAN.

I'm really eyeballing some dual processor servers on ebay right now....Dell poweredge's primarily.

I've got XP Home and I actually like it I've hated every other windows from 2.1 to 98SE but XP is actually good Its extremely stable, very reliable, reasonably easy to use, good for games, has the driver roll back and system restore facilities and so many other handy tools. Plus it is a very good excuse to get more RAM

One thing i find amusing is how much effort linux users have to make so that their linux box emulate windows.

I mean, they have a different OS, wich they consider better (and may be right for what i know) but then they work on it to make it act like/look like windows... Bloody waste of time if you ask me.

I have Win98 FE on my primary PC (all of the new games are here). I speed tweak it and update, clean up it very often so it runs very well. It's also the only PC that I OC.

I also have Win XP Pro on the newer PC. This PC would be used primary for surfing the net. I didn't have much chance of using it, since my brother is currently taking over this PC.

    I also have a couple old systems, 1 run Win95 and 1 run DOS 6.2 + Win 3.11

I had one PC with Win ME, but I gave it to my girlfriend because it's the worst PC for games.

Why do girlfriends never play games? Mine feels threatened by them, i guess she feels i may trade her for the latest Pentium IV or something...
