    THE JACOBITE REBELLIONS

    Factions:

House of Hannover - Ruling house of England from the early 1700's, when George, Elector of Hannover became King George I of England. Regarded by many in England as foreigners (the king can barely speak a word of English&#33 they are nevertheless the rightful heirs to the throne of Queen Anne. They command a professional army of English regular troops, backed up by German and continental mercenaries, as well as the loyal Ulstermen of the north of Ireland.

Irish Jacobites - they are more loyal to the cause of Ireland than to the cause of James Stewart and are for the most part Jacobites only in name. Nonetheless they are fierce, tough soldiers fighting in "all causes but their country's own". Led by the legendary Irish Wild Geese, exiled patriots who eventually gained rank and nobility in continental armies, they are quite a force to reckon with on the battlefield, making up for poor discipline with vengeful ferocity.

Clan Stewart - the house of the exiled James or, in Latin, Jacobus (hence the name Jacobite). Surviving in exile they muster malcontents and secret allies and wait patiently for their moment to strike. For the time being they are in the good graces of the French monarchy, ancient enemies of England.

Clan MacDonald - hereditary lord of the northern Isles and a great leader of the northern Scottish highlanders, the MacDonalds are fierce but generally apolitical warriors. If anything interests them, it is the prospect of plunder. Their fierce highland warriors have the power to strike fear into even the most hardened regulars.

Clan Gordon - Earl of Huntley, an ally of the English with lands in the Scottish lowlands, he is one of the main rivals for domination of Scotland. Bloody feuds between clans and rival nobles have kept Scotland poor and divided for too long.

Clan Graham - Viscount Dundee and Marquess of Montrose. The house of Graham is a political pendulum for Scotland. Sometimes siding and leading rebellions in the name of the exiled King James, at other times currying English favor and driving Scottish rebels before them. One thing is certain, though. Graham's only real cause is his own.

Clan Campbell - Duke of Argyll. One of the richest and most powerful Scottish nobles whose clan is generally loyal to the government in London, the cosmopolitan Campbell is a very cool customer who often would rather take the path of diplomacy than war. He plays his cards like a master gambler and is not adverse to risks however.

The idea here is each faction struggles to gain control of the British isles and they will all have the opportunity to recruit various types of soldiers. But the trick is they have to 'develop' alliances (through building construction) with certain 'powers' to be able to recruit certain soldiers and most are mutually exclusive. For instance if you play Clan Graham, you have the option to build a CURRY ROYAL FAVOR to start you on the road to recruiting English dragoons and regulars, or you can build TOAST THE KING OVER THE WATER which eventually will let you recruit Scottish highlanders and lochaber axemen. If you have one building you cannot build the other. Options will include:

CROWN LOYALTY - recruit English and Hanoverian forces
THE KING OVER THE WATER - recruit Scottish Jacobite forces
AULD ALLIANCE - recruit French army forces
RED HAND OF ULSTER - recruit Ulster regiments and militia.
IRISH RISING - recruit free Irish regiments and militia
PRINCE OF ORANGE - recruit Dutch mercenaries and guardsmen

Many of the in-game MTW units can be converted or renamed - just off the cuff, the Varangian Guards would make great Lochaber Axemen (just dress them in a kilt) while there would probably lots of interesting units like Highwaymen, Border Reivers, Blackguards (battlefield assasins?) and Grenadiers (early grenadiers will be Naptha throwers with an attitude&#33 and so on.

    Oh and I forgot:

The Clan Murray - Dukes of Atholl, may side with government (usually) but sometimes may, 'betray' the Hanoverians for the Bonnie Prince (ie Lord George Murray).

    JACOBITE TOTAL WAR

    UNITS

    I - IRREGULARS

Peasantry - Untrained, unwilling mass levies of farmers, coblers and beggars armed with little better than the tools of their trade. Only good as cannon fodder for their weight in numbers. (Peasant -- All factions -- ADD: peasants dress, farmers hat -- STR: 100 men)

Highwaymen - mounted robbers and cutthroat murderers without loyalty or discipline. Armed with pistols and rapiers, they are efficient raiders especially deadly because of their invisibility on the strategic map. (Ghulam Bodyguards -- English/Lowland/Irish -- ADD: black cape, black tricorn, black kerchief mask -- STR: 12 men)

Border Reivers - infamous warring families and marauders of the Scottish border who have fought for domination of the north for generations. Some light armor and various weapons. (Muwahid Foot -- English/Lowland -- ADD: 17th C style clothes -- STR: 30 men)

Watchmen - English & Irish hirelings who protect cattle and trade and serve as bodyguards. Can detect Highwaymen and spies. (Men at Arms -- English/Irish -- ADD: 18th C style clothes -- STR: 20 men)

Armed Mob - Incited by poor work conditions, money, drink and rabble rousers this mob is a dangerous, unthinking mass of humanity which will destroy anything in its way. Though characterised by poor morale and no training nor cohesion its angry offensive spirit is still dangerous (Futuwwa -- English/Irish/Lowland -- ADD: 18th C style clothes, townspeople -- STR -- 100 men)

Adventurers - gentlemen, cads, mercenaries and opportunists of every nation freely moved across Europe's boarders, seeking fame, fortune and glory in the bedrooms, card tables and battlefields of the continent. Many such 'volunteers' found their way into the armies and gave good service, often rising to very high rank. (Gallowglasses -- All factions -- ADD: 18th C style clothes of a stylish and expensive cut -- STR: 15 men)

    II - LATE 1600's

Musketeer Company - Regular infantry of the late 17th Century armed with slow fire matchlocks or primitive muskets. (Swiss Armored Pikemen -- English/Irish/Lowland -- ADD: 17th C style clothes -- STR: 40 men)

Granadoes Company - Crack assault infantry armed with swords, hatchets, muskets and granadoes for storming fortifications and towns. Dressed in distinctive soft coped hats in Janissary style. Assault and charge bonuses but tend to overextend themselves needlessly. (Naptha Throwers - English/Irish/Lowland/Highland -- ADD: grenadier hats of cloth, wide skirted coats -- STR: 60 men)

Troop of Dragoons - mounted infantry armed with swords and carbines for mounted and dismounted action. Poorly mounted but able to execute cavalry charges. (Mounted Crossbowmen -- English/Irish/Lowland -- ADD: 17th C style dragoon dress, round brimmed felt hat -- STR: 60 men)

Troop of Horse - well mounted heavy cavalry meant for decisive action on the battlefield. Sometimes armored in cuirassier style but by the late 17th Century they were generally protected only by buffcoats. (Gendarmes -- English/Irish/Lowland -- ADD: 17th C style dress, buffcoat, wide brimmed hat -- STR: 30 men)

III - ENGLISH TROOPS OF THE 1700's

Company of the Line - English and Hanoverian regular infantry. Well disciplined 'volunteer' force, with one of the best rates of fire in all Europe. Their superb fire discipline and accurate, deadly firepower make them feared on the continent and several volleys are often enough to reduce the enemy to a shambles. Have relatively poor assault/melee values. (Musketeers -- English/Lowland -- ADD: 18th C style English redcoat uniform with tricorn, red waistcoat and breeches, white knee high gaiters, brown bess musket -- STR: 75 men)

Royal Company of the Line - English and Hanoverian regular infantry. Well disciplined 'volunteer' force, with one of the best rates of fire in all Europe. Their superb fire discipline and accurate, deadly firepower make them feared on the continent and several volleys are often enough to reduce the enemy to a shambles. Have slightly better assault/melee values and higher morale from the honor of their 'royal' designation. (Musketeers -- English/Lowland -- ADD: 18th C style English redcoat uniform with tricorn, blue waistcoat and breeches, white knee high gaiters, blue facings, brown bess musket -- STR: 75 men)

Royal Guards Company - English Guard infantry. An elite force, with one of the best rates of fire in all Europe. Have higher morale from the honor of their 'fusillier' designation. (Musketeers -- English/Lowland -- ADD: 18th C style English redcoat uniform, blue waistcoat and breeches, white knee high gaiters, blue facings, brown bess musket and fusillier type cap -- STR: 90 men)

Independent Highland Company - Scottish highlander recruits to 'police the highlands' armed with traditional highland weapons of claymore and targe aside from the English musket. Lower assault values than 'real' highlanders but these are still relatively high compared to regular troops. (Highlanders -- English/Lowland -- ADD: Blue bonnet, Red doublet, green kilt -- STR: 80 men)

Black Watch Company - Crack Scottish regiment with experience on the European continent. Armed with muskets, broadswords and targes, they are on par with their 'real' Highland bretheren in terms of assault. (Bulgarian Brigands -- English -- ADD: Blue bonnet, red doublet, government 'black watch' tartan -- STR: 90 men)

Grenadier Company - Elite assault troops with traditional 'mitre' hats. No longer throw grenades but are good on the assault. (Arbalesters -- English/Lowland -- ADD: Stiff mitre cap, turned back coat, crossbelts with matchboxes -- STR: 90 men)

Sergeants of Foot - veteran non-coms armed with distinctive 'partizan' pikes or halberds. Give morale bonus to troops under their command as well as serving as line stiffeners. Wear swords and sashes and extra lace to distinguish them from line infantry. (Militia Sergeants -- English/Irish/Lowland -- ADD: Distinctive 18th C sergeants dress, sword and shoulder sash, looped lace at the right shoulder -- STR: 12 men)

English Dragoons - veteran medium cavalry armed with heavy swords and carbines for both mounted and dismounted action. Ruthless and effective and greatly feared by dismounted troops. (Mounted Crossbows -- English/Lowland -- ADD: Distinctive 18th C dragoon uniform, black tricorne, buff breeches, black knee length marching boots -- STR: 80 men)

Scots Greys Dragoons - elite Scottish dragoon cavalry with heavy swords and carbines for both mounted and dismounted action. They gained the distinct honor of wearing their characteristic grenadier hats and riding their trademark gray horses after defeating the horse grenadiers of the French guard during Marlborough's campaigns. (Bedouin Camels -- English/Lowland -- ADD: Distinctive grenadier mitre hats, blue breeches, convert camels into gray horses -- STR: 100 men)

    IV - SCOTTISH HIGHLANDERS

Highlanders - wild clansmen from the mountainous north, undisciplined and rapacious and capable of mounting fierce army-shattering charges. Armed mainly with the claymore and shield or targe. (Highlanders -- Lowland/Highland -- ADD: bonnet, widen kilt -- STR: 80 men)

Jacobite Company - formed and disciplined 'regiments' of highlanders, stiffend by foreign volunteers as well as exiled Jacobites these troops are almost a match for English regular troops, making up for lack of discipline with spirited assaults. (Musketeers -- Lowland/Highland -- ADD: Kilt, bonnet, Doublet -- STR: 90 men)

Highland Chieftains - the clan chieftain and his bodyguards these men are the fathers and guiding spirits of their clan and will fight to the death for the cause they serve. (Highlanders -- Lowland/Highland -- ADD: bonnet, doublet, widen kilt -- STR: 12 men)

    V - IRISH REBELS

Irish Company - light infantry armed with long, deadly knives, shillelaghs and stones. Good for skirmish and ambush work but no match for disciplined troops. (Irish Kerns/Irish Dartmen -- English/Irish/Lowland -- ADD: change spears for stones, add shillelaghs -- STR: 80 men)

Royal Ecoissais - French 'foreign legion' infantry of the line composed of exiled Scottish volunteers. A crack infantry regiment with uniforms, discipline and top notch equipment. After some research I've come up with a different set of Jacobite units...

GHILLIES - Highland Peasants armed with scythes, pitchforks or other farming impliments. Very much like the futuwwa/nizari/crusader types (low morale and organization but effective charge)

LOCHABAR MEN - Highland Peasants armed with the deadly long-handled Lochaber Axes. Similar to Ghillies but with AXE type weapons. (Use Varangian Guard as basis)

CAIRNACHS - Highland farmers with better stature than the peasantry. The bulk of the Jacobite army would be composed of men like these. Armed with muskets from various sources and lacking discipline and training their fire is at best erratic. Like other highlanders their best asset is a ferocious charge.

TACKSMEN - Highland nobility from the chief's immediate extended family, these men were the fiercest of fighters and occupied the second line, just behind the chieftain and his bodyguard. Armed with claymores, pistols and targes they are the raw edge of the highland charge.

DERBHFINE - Highland chief and his bodyguard, armed with claymores, they are the best motivated and relatively best equipped of the Highland units. This is the 'bodyguard' unit of the Jacobite factions.

DUINE-UASAIL - Highland gentry, sometimes mounted, gentlemen farmers and volunteers that made up the majority of the Jacobite officer corps and cavalry.

LOWLAND VOLUNTEERS - Generally unwilling, reluctant volunteers though there were some genuinely motivated Jacobite adherents. A mixed bag of recruits armed primarily with muskets.

JACOBITE LIFEGUARDS - The elite mounted guard unit of the Jacobite Royalty, these are committed noblemen with everything to lose if they fail. Will defend their prince to the death.

JACOBITE COMPANY - Once the Jacobites are firmly established and some sort of organization/infrastructure for a permanent military force is built up, they can train and field companies of regular troops, not unlike the French and British regulars. Mostly staffed by veterans of the Jacobite Wars they will be of a generally lower quality than both in movement and firepower, relying on brisk and fierce volleys (though still not comparable to the British firepower quality) before mounting fierce bayonet and sword charges in the 'auld style'.

CLAN MACGREGOR - A class all by themselves, they were driven to banditry for 200 years by the relentless greed of their neighbors, the clan Campbell. Skilled in thieving, blackmail and other necessary vices to survive they make excellent stealth units like the Battlefield Ninja.

CLAN RISINGS - various clans can provide higher quality recruits of various kinds:

Camerons - highly motivated elite quality LOCHABARS and crack quality TACKSMEN
MacPhersons - highly motivated veteran quality TACKSMEN
Fraser - highly motivated crack quality CAIRNACHS
Mackenzie - highly motivated veteran quality CAIRNACHS
Macleod - highly motivated crack quality TACKSMEN
Macrae - highly motivated crack quality GHILLIES
Gordon - highly motivated crack quality DUINE-UASAIL

I like the idea as you LDC
and you have put a lot ground work there.
MR EGGS units will work very nice with this
and he is nearly finished the first lot.

We will provide all the help we can of course.

Nice to see you sticking to this idea.
    Keep up the good work.
The tricorner hat guys will be compiled next month
if you wish to have them in it. Plus some others
    that might suit.
    I'll be in touch.

    Thanks
    regards.

    Hullo LK,

No problem. I'm good to go with stuff like this, research, coming up with the formulae/ideas but not so great when it comes to the actual uniforms. For drill looks and ideas I'm going to reinactor unit sources like Kirke's Lambs and Pulteney's Foot. If possible would rather just dress up extant MTW/VI units rather than starting from scratch tho.

BTW whats the strength limit on units before they crash? Base strength I mean? Can it go over 100? Like 150? Or any number below 200?

    Thanks,

Can't wait to see MR EGGs stuff. We actually intersect as the early Jacobite period covers stuff like Killiecrankie and Dunkeld and the Boyne.

Has diplomacy become better in VI? More diplomatic options perhaps? Problem is in games post Dark Ages (War of the Roses/etc onwards) diplomacy becomes vital as warfare itself and it IS nice to get more than one faction to fight a battle (like Scots 'Whig' Clans and English Hanoverians or an alliance between Atholl, Perth and the Jacobite Stewarts)

    Revised Factions

Revised the factions to take into account a more regional and less confusing set of allegiances.

MACDONALD - the western isles of Scotland, they are able to raise such warrior clans as the MacLeods and Camerons

MACKENZIE - the northeastern highlands, these include the infamous 'Whig clans' such as the Murrays, Grants and Rosses which provide superb regular infantry as well as the Gordons who have the only decent 'horse country' in the Highlands.

GRAHAM - the crafty, cosmopolitan lowland lairds they are loyal only to themselves. Includes many of the Scots nobility and their titles and power.

CAMPBELL - the wry-mouthed, ravenous coveter of lands and the powerful barrier between the 'wild' highlanders and the 'civilized' lowlanders they are mainly a clan all to themselves with the various septs such as Moore and MacArthur being represented. However they may raise such clans as the outlawed MacGregors (can anyone say Rob Roy?) and the warlike Camerons if they turn to the Jacobite side.

MURRAY - the dukes of Atholl representative of the middleground nobility with leanings closer to Jacobitism than the Grahams or Mackenzies. Can raise powerful nobles such as the Drummonds, Dukes of Perth and Gordon, Marquesses of Huntley to powerful clans like the Frasers of Lovat or the Robertsons of Struan.

HANOVER - The English rulers of the British Isles were also electors of Hanover and often cared more for their German province then their British subjects. They may NEVER build Jacobite structures.

These clans can 'declare' for either the government (Hanover) or the Jacobites (Stuart) by 'building' relationships for either. They are mutually exclusive, meaning you cannot toast 'The King over the Water' and 'God Save King George' at the same time.

    HANOVERIAN
    God Save the King
    Royal Taxation
    Royal Patronage
    Royal Favor

    JACOBITE
    The King over the Water
    The Fiery Cross

Rather than monetary denominations (Florins, Pounds, etc) I thought this campaign would be best represented by amassing PRESTIGE which allows you to 'buy' troops and structures, though in real world terms it would mean you had enough influence to either raise troops locally or request from overseas while gaining titles such as 'Duke' or winning 'Royal Favor' would mean more money and influence. It needed something more tangible than mere money and I think PRESTIGE sums it up pretty well. This is especially important in that most of the time, British (English) troops were committed to other theaters such as the infamous West Indies station, the East Indies and India and sometimes on the continent. The Home defenses were often neglected and undermanned and even famous Marshal Wade was forced to admit that 'England cannot be defended' following the battle of Prestonpans. Similarly, while the Jacobites can raise troops quicker than the Hanoverians the depredations and unrulyness of the 'wild Highlanders' will greatly increase the cost of MAINTAINING a large army. Furthermore the Jacobites will need greater prestige to 'invite' French regiments to support their cause. The idea being, once the British successfully amass a large army or two they will be nearly invincible unless the French can be brought in to support the rising, while on the other hand, the Jacobites can raise large and powerful assault forces quickly from the Highlanders but will have a lot of trouble keeping them together.

And thats the way it should be

    Ruffian Mercenaries

    Highwaymen - horse pistols
Border Reivers Foot - Billhooks and swords
    Border Reivers Horse - swords

    Low Prestige

    Peasants - pitchforks
    Highland Peasants - scythe
Highland Watchmen - claymore and targe
Irish Rebels - stones and shillelaghs
Armed Mob - stones and clubs
    Adventurers - pistol and rapier

    Medium Prestige

Militia Company - poorly armed with old fowling pieces raised by county government or minor gentry.
Town Militia - better armed at the expense of a town they are still poorly disciplined.
Highland Militia - Scottish Highlander militia armed with old fowling pieces

    High Prestige

Company of the Line - regular infantry armed with muskets and well drilled.
Independent Company - Scottish Highland company

Prestige is the currency of Jacobite Total War. It represents your factions standing and worth, combining property, monetary and honors. More 'prestigious' factions can raise more and better quality troops and, more importantly, maintain them for longer periods of time. Regular Troops in JTW are extremely expensive to buy w/c represents the British government's relative unconcern for home defense especially forcing the government player to rely on militia, ad hoc troops or worse, mercenary brigands. On the other hand, Highlanders are cheap to raise if you have the appropriate 'buildings' (allegiances to either the Stuarts or Hanoverians are defined in terms of constructing MTW buildings) but extremely expensive to maintain for long periods of time, to represent the Highlanders melting away after they'd pillaged or gotten bored or homesick as well as the bad feelings that pillaging left on those pillaged, mainly the Lowlanders or neighboring clans.

Also, spies will be lots easier to build and should be the main way to control your territories.

Then when rebellion does occur (w/c nets you plenty of prestige but you gotta consolidate your position - thinking of using the CATHEDRAL to represent this) you can raise Clan Mercenaries or Guards units. Want to include lots of period flavor through different clans that were part of 45.
