Hello, some of you may have seen me on the offical forums. I've been lurking here since shogun first came out. I come bearing gifts, a selection of unit availability and province bonus text files. There is also a file with the stats of the VI units. Anyone wanting one can post their email on this topic and I will send them out.

I wanted to post on the tech dojo but I know that not allowed for new members so perhaps someone could move this.I posted this on the offical forums a while ago but I have got no response:

I'm playing the original shogun with 1.12 patch, no MI. Battle mode is not working very well. The sound is all messed up with static and screeching during the battles. There are also many graphical errors including black hollow polygons in the landscape, white lines coming down from the sky and men turning into white arrows.

I have set antialienising (sp?) to program controlled (which is the same as off for shogun), updated my drivers, tried different settings for resolution etc but the graphics are still messed up.

Setting sound acceleration to off reduces the sound problems, but there are still some glitches. This also makes the sound lag behind everything else.

I have:
windows XP home
DirectX 9
P4 2.4 GHz
Hercules 3d prophet 3 (geforce 3)
512 MB ram
Soundblaster Live
Latest drivers for everything.

Shogun worked perfectly on this system before but has been nothing but a headache since I reinstalled it after a complete reinstall of windows XP and an update to DX9. MTW and VI work fine with no problems, as does everything else.

Greetings Frogbeastegg and welcome to the Org.
Your problem sounds like it is driver related, sometimes updating the drivers to the newest version can actually cause a problem. I have a GeforceMX 440 myself and when I updated to the detonator 41.09 drivers everything got messed up so I went back to the tried and true 30.82 version drivers and everything works fine.
I also seem to recall some issues with the Soundblaster, you might want to do a search in the Apothecary on that to find the details.

Im not a techie person (well sort of) but my guess would be its your evil DX 9.
heard that its not too good with some things.

But im sure someone more able to will be able to pin it down a bit more.

Yes had read about some soundblasters not working properly in a thread somewhere.

Wow two responses in less than a day I'm honoured

I think it is driver related too, but I don't have much choice if I want to use the directX9 drivers (which I do, I'm attached to having a moving frame rate). I didn't want DX9 but viking invasion was demanding it so I didn't have a choice.

Thanks for the search tip, previously I was searching for shogun and I didn't see that topic. I have already tried turning off hardware acceleration but it didn't help much. Creatives driver download is not working currently so I can't update to the hot off the press drivers there.

Only 498 posts remaining until I can get rid of that ugly avatar By the way are the old shogun ones still available for new members? I thought they were cool and I don't like the medieval ones as much.

DX9 is not required to run VI only recommended if you read the mamual it will tell you the same info.
I know on the set up it seems it is needed to play the game but many people myself included are running VI just fine with DX8.1 you can find related threads on the topic in the apothecary.

Thanks Lord of Storms, it seems I got clobbered by a pair of first time events there.
1.First time I didn't read the instructions before installing a game, this would have been the first time it would have helped. Stupid of me I admit, I've been playing these things for 10 years and should know better

2.First time a game has demanded a new directX when it would work with an older one, usually if I try to skip a directX update during installation everything goes all funky.

Oh well, it is my own fault so I won't moan.

I've been sifting through the apothecary again, I have found several useful topics but so far nothing has worked.

the guys are right about dx9. install says you must have it, but you dont and going back to older drivers does sometimes work. you most likely want the 30.82's or the 41.09's or even that 43 series, i think it was for that card.

another thing to consider, since you have the hercules version of the nvidia card is, dont use the hercules drivers. they tend to suck. go to the the nvidia site and use the ones there.

as for the sound stuff, the creative cards took a lot of hits that wasnt their fault. if you remember, the TW games use windows media player and since the WMP can and does use different codecs (sound protocols) you can get varying results with it depending on the codec you have. try a differennt coded or just go update it on the official site.

also, if you've got winamp or divx or some of those dvd players installed, make sure they're disabled in your computer startup. you dont even want to load them up.

i've found the creative cards just fine for all the TW games.

anti-aliasing and sound acceleration wont fix your graphics and sound problems. they can help improve lagging, but not graphical and sound glitches. the sampling rate might, but it's fairly rare in this game.

you're also using xp home, which is a freaking hog. there's just way too many background things running to play games well. go to the black viper site for help on that one. they do an excellent job of helping you turn things off. the site is listed in our links thread in the apoth.

if all else fails and yer just dying for an stw game, find or make a clean partition on your drive and do a dual install/dual boot with win98 as the other o/s. stick dx8.1 on it and do your drivers for it. might find that easier.

I had a similar experience with STW after I installed DX 9 and the latest graphics drivers on my Win98 machine. I actually had to reinstall the original OS with the original drivers and DX 8.1 to get STW to work again.

MTW also works fine on my computer. So I'm sticking with Win98 and DX8.1 and the old graphics drivers for now...

i had a similar problem with sound on my soundblaster with xp and viking invasion. Also had dx9 installed. I reinstalled win98se and my problems disappeared. I think the soundblaster update site sucks and is very confusing, i wish it was as simple as updating my geforce drivers but Creative seem to want to confuse you so i gave up and just used the win98 drivers with a clean win98se reinstall and then updated to windows me with dx9 installed. I have had no lag or problems even with the hardware acceleration turned on. Go figure?

Kraellin-I'm using nvidias offical detinator drivers. There are no DVD players or similar installed either. I only just got my PC settled down again after a new install of XP after changing my motherboard, I really don't want to mess it up again.

Could someone please post an idiots guide to reinstalling XP to get rid of DX9, I'm not too sure of how to do it because someone else usually does that for me. I really don't want to mess my PC up.

Its a shame I can't just use the restore points to remove DX9, blasted microsoft

dlundie-I've got to agree with you there, what a mess I waited 1 hour for their diognostic thingy to work out which drivers I needed but it didn't finish. I tried to get the drivers manually but the site went down Funny thing is I was repeatedly asking why they can't make it as easy as nvidia
