In my first MTW campaign since installing VI, I'm playing the Hungarians. I spent the early portion of the game taking rebel provinces and building up, preparing for the arrival of the Golden Horde. A little while before they showed up, I was attacked by the Byzantines with their 9-star generals. I fought them off, and then one of my 3-star assassins killed their heirless king--no more Byzantine threat

My assassin was now 4-star, and in a couple turns I had two more 3-stars. The Golden Horde showed up, I sent my 4-star and a 3-star after their king as soon as he arrived, and BAM No more Golden Horde. I'll admit that I was a bit lucky, because I had something like an 11% chance on the Byzantine king and a 17% chance on the Golden Horde king, but I almost feel like I got off too easy. The new upgradable taverns really beef up the power of assassins. Anybody think it's maybe too much?

Don't think so. It seems you had a lot of luck. Besides, you will find that border forts kill your assasins galore if you move them into such provinces, so every star they can get is needed.

There was a VI game i had in wich i wasted 50 assassins just to kill of the mercians and couldn't. You had a lot of luck. As it was before VI the assassins were almost useless IMO. You had to build them up expecting a lot of luck, or else they would get killed so that they could get two star generals... Pre-VI i never killed a faction with assassins. The money they would cost would get me an army to get the lands fighting.
