Tosa posted in the Dungeon that Junior members can now use Custom Avatars. Of course I immediately made my own, that is more fitting to my LotR modding:

Then I used skin 7 to see the custum avatars, but now I can't see all the other system avatars. Is the on purpose or is it just the way the forum handles avatars?

    Cheers, Duke John

Alrowan, we have contacted an well estabelished artist from whom we can use images freely, and she also might draw entirely new images specifically for our little mod.

Here are some more avatars I made:

    Treebeard

    Question

What good is that if no one can see them? Is it that you have to have the #7 skin in order to view them?and unless evryone else has the #7 skin whats the point?

I can see them. But I can't see the system avatars, so from my point of view; what's the point in having system avatars when I can't see them?
That's why I asked if it's intentional that system and custom avatars are on different skins, it's a bit useless if they don't merge.

i'm re-posting this here, from the other thread in here about custom avatars...

you must have the custom avatar file stored on a server that allows for remote linking, otherwise you'll just get the red x in your avatar slot for the custom avatar skin.

also note, that others using other skins will still see your avatar as the one you were using before, not the custom one. and, you will ONLY see other folk's avatars that are using the custom avatar skin and have successfully added in a custom avatar.

there is also a 100 x 100 pixel maximum. you can use smaller if you like.

the point of these is obvious. if you dont like them, dont use them, but i'm sure they'll catch on and you'll see a swing to more and more folks using them.

besides, it's a new feature. sheesh, give a dog a bone and they bite you.

    Konnichiwa,

There's a lot of discussion about avatars, and I understand all those wishes. They are not always fully compatible with each other though.

By adding a new skin, an extra database field and some code, more wishes can be served. Like to see the systemavatars (uniform theme and style)? -> select skin 1-6 to view the forums. Like a 100% custom one? -> enter an URL to the avatar and use skin 7 (which is currently based on GuildMed skin).

Skin 7 is a bit primitive at the moment, it's possible that the system will, time and knowledge permitting, be updated in the near future (URLAvatar in PM, profile, reset button in controlpanel, a generic image in case none is selected).

More skins can be added too. If a group of people has problems with the colorscheme/fontsizes/-types, new ones can be added. Satisfying each individual wish here is a bit of a problem though: 4,000 different skins consume a lot of space and maintenance.

This option is available in Your Control panel, once your account equals Junior Member or up. 100*100 pixels is the maximum, not entering a size will display your picture as 100*100. This may have odd results. Max is set to 10 kb at the moment (56 k modems users) and no sound. Be nice to each other.

Accepted formats are gif/animated gif, flash, and jpeg/jpg and png (please update me if there are more browser supported formats).

Never even taken a look at the different skins, maybe I should check it out.
Still I like the system avatars, think it keeps things nice and clean. It gives this forum a nice historic look. The new option with the custom avatars in skin 7 is nice though for the people who can't live without their own personal avatar .

Obviously I am only posting this here now to get closer to 500 and finally choose another avatar
