As fas as I know, there are mods that will allow you to play nations that can't be played in the official campaign. I'm interested in playing the Swiss in the late era.
I want the mod to keep the campaign as close to the official one as possible, so it preferably shouldn't add new countries. Of course, it wouldn't hurt if the mod would allow me to play as the Pope or Mongols either.
The question is, what mod do you recommend?
1. Go into your campmap\startpos\ directory and open up Late.txt in Notepad.
2. Find (or run a search for) SetActiveFaction:: FN_SWISS
3. Change the FN_MINOR to FN_MAJOR.
3a. Do the same thing to FN_GOLDEN_HORDE if you wish to play the Mongols.
4. Save, and play.
Never tried but I believe you can play the pope.
I don't think you can actually be the pope and do all the excommunicating stuff.
Prefer the Orthodox/Pagan/Muslim factions myself.

You can play with the Pope, but you can't excomunnicate all other catholic factions, you are just a faction (very weak).Excomunnicating all factions should be great.

Could we get a modder on this? Crack the code and all excuminacations and calls for crusades and such as the Pope?

I'm afraid that will almost certainly be hardcoded (without me looking into it I'd still say 95% chance that it is.)
Most aspects of the actual gameplay are hardcoded of course.

Lare, I have a copy of my first mod which allows you to play as the Swiss, with some tweaking to the trade etc. and oldie but a goody for MTW 1.1 I will send it to you if you are interested. And yes the Popes hardcoded data he is here to stay. LOS
