Units have these but what does it do?
Is it just protection from arrows or in melee as well?

    During each attack cycle:

probability to kill = attacker's attack value - defender's defense value + combat bonuses
The armor value protects against ranged fire.

Just keep in mind that if your general has no head, the whole army gets a +99 charge bonus, making even the most feeble warrior a highly efficient killing machine. Mostly its just the effect of the army routing forward instead of backward... Mere death cannot compare to what is expected if the leader of the undead catch you not obeying their whims...

attack bonus is how good you kill

defense bonus mitigates your enemy's attack bonus

armor level protects from ranged fire

it's nice, tidy little system, see?

Oh wait I see. Yes it protects you from both, theoretically. Though bullet penetration is high enough to where the effect is less marked. There *is* an effect though, from my observation at least.
