So I've been doing some reading here and figured out how to change a few things in the game. I changed all the factions to major (except Novgorod in early and the Burgundians because I've never seen that before) and added a few resources like gold in Rome and the Papal States (to represent the income they recieve from chrisitans everywhere)and some other small stuff.

But...here's the prob: For some reason the Papacy can't build Chivalric sergeants or men-at-arms. Why? They are still set as a Catholic faction with Catholic reigion, and the tech map says that all Catholics can build them. So what's the deal? Am I going to have to create new units so my Pope won't be left behind technologically?

    Woah

I don't know if this has anything to do with my small mods...probably does, though I don't see how...

But for some reason I can't seem to build swiss pikemen. I'm playing HRE, have a county militia + master armourer...but no pikemen...no swiss pikemen...and certainly no swiss armored pikemen.

Here is EVERYTHING I've done to the game:

-Changed all factions from minor to major (except Novogrod in the early period and Burgundians in the late period) On the faction selection screen the choices went down into the picture below, so I cut and pasted the minor factions to go below the major factions to get the little scroll thing back. (I think it had something to do with the // on those lines)

    - Added gold resources to Rome and the Papal States.

    -Added chapter house to Rome.

I don't see how or why this would affect my being able to build pikemen or swiss pikemen (I CAN however build swiss halberdiers) but somehow it may. I did play as the swiss and was able to build them too.

Can anyone help? How can I get some better units for the Pope and what happend to my pikemen???

Ok I did some experiments and no one can build any pikemen of any sort until the late period..then they are buildable. Any ideas?

The Pikemen only are buildable in Late, no ? So you can't build them earlier ... If you want to I think you can edit the CrusaderUnit file (with Gnome editor, or even with Notepad/Wordpad) and change the settings.

No clue for Un-papal Chivalrics, sorry .

I thought pikemen were buildable after 1260. Or maybe thats when gunpowder becomes available. In any case im pretty sure pikemen appear in the middle of the High period, because i remember they get their own announcement window VERY LONG SPEARS HAVE BEEN INVENTED or something like that

Really? I could have sworn that I've used pikemen before I was using guns. Are you guys sure?

If it is that doesn't make a whole lot of sense because the Greek Phalanxes used very long spears...and well before 1260 A.D. or whatever. I'm gonna have to change that date if I can figure out how. Also seems a little unnecesary since you can't build them without a fortress anyway.

Has anyone else noticed the Pope's lack of Chivalric units? Is it supposed to be that way?

IIRC the Chivaric units can only be build after High age as well.

So no matter what, no one can build Chivalric units until 1205 and no pikemen until 1321?

If so that's gotta be changed. Historical accuracy is great but if my leadership can make the empire advance faster than they did in reality, then great. Just like if my leadership were to win a battle that was lost historically.

Well if that's true I guess that was the problem. Thanks guys. So now the question is: What file controlls that stuff? Where is it decided that Chivalric units or pikemen can't be built until %%%% year? Also where can you change the word Year to the word Turn.

Oops, nevermind. I found the unit stuff (early, high, and late) in the gnome editor like you said.

in the original game v1.0 once you built the buildings you could build the units
the patch v1.1 and VI v2.0 corrected this so the advanced units didn't appear in the early age if you were a fast builder
    basically
    feudal units is early
    chivalric units are high
    pikes, goths etc are late

this applies to the equivalent muslim and orthadox units as well.

    1. Make the Burgundians/Novgorod Playable. I've done that. They're fun.
    2. You can't make the Papacy playable, not in any version. All the people I've know who have tried messed up MTW/VI horribly, as well as their computer.
    3. The Swiss, Make playable (I've also done that). They're really really fun, but all they have is Switzerland so I gave them Tyrolia too

the Papacy are totally playable: during the campaign, press the numbers buttons to go through the factions; if there are more than 10, the use shift# to get the rest. when the Papacy come up, just start playing them.

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about...

in the startpos file the major factions are listed, then the minor factions, then the ones that don't exist yet or don't exist anymore (Like Novogrod in the High or Late period when the Russians are there). Anyway those will have a // in front of the line. If you take the factions that you just changed from minor to major and move them above the ones with // you won't have to deal with using numbers to scroll down to the new faction or having the names sitting on top the picture below. You will have a nice neat scroll bar to select your faction.
