In VI you can do that. You can make a CustomX (where X is 1 - 9 some say 10) folder and make put there your bis as CustomX.bif and CustmX_H.bif. It works well, cause I have used it a lot in my mod.

Then all you have to do is change the name of the units sprite folder to CustomX in the Unit production file.
