    Recovered from the depths of an ancient backup,

    I am uncertain how many of these will work in VI,

    Yes as many as you want, and spaces in between each one. I've had a look at the list just now, there are too many to list here, most are debug things like setting hardware sounds and stuff. These are not very interesting and can be fiddle with from option screen anyway. A few interesting ones I've spotted, not sure if they actually work or not but here they are.
    D - debug mode, runs in a smaller screen
    C - selfrun mode, just let the AI fight itself (mostly the same is -ian)
    -old_rebels uses a different way of generating rebellions
    -green_generals newly created replacment is non-experianced
    -loyalty:X set the suto tax to maintain X loyalty
    -bbc apparaent allow the host to pause MP games
    -strictserver you may also need to have this off for pause

    Again command switch is mostly for debuging, these may not work and can crash your game.

    While in debug mode (D, C, or -ian) various keys do wonderful things to the strategy map. The number keys allows you to change factions, a turns on auto run - ends the turn as soon as it starts. # or ' depending on what keyboard you have let the AI take over your faction, along with autorun makes the game play itself, great for testing out mods. To see your AI controlled faction fight in battle mode instead of auto resolve press Shift # or '. To turn off AI control press the number key for your faction. G toggle see the whole map on and off, same as the cheat. Don't press F12 as that quits everything.
    Good Luck

    Is it possible to run MTW in a window ?

    Put D on the shortcut command line (no minus, just D).

    Doesn't run in a window so much as at the normal resolution in the top-left of the screen, on top of anything else you've got there. But the rest of the screen is accessible.

    Time for one of my hidden-in-some-obscure-thread-secert-extra-command-line-switch-post me thinks.

    New to the VI patch:
    -old_age:A where A is when the old age kicks in for generals, for kings, royal blood and hero add 10 years to that. It default to 40 which gives you the above variation you see now.

    -death_msg:R where R is the rank of a general must be to get a general dies of old age parchment when you are displaying non-critical messages.

    -critical_death_msg:R same as the one above, but it display a death message regardless of if the non-critical message check box is ticked or not. The default is death_msg:4, critical_death_msg:11. This gives the same behaviour as before the patch - you only death message when you want non-critical message and the general is rank 4+.
    found and added

    Default Re: Command Line Switches

    some other things switches do (and some usefull tips)
    (from a varety of posts here at the org)

    ///////////////////////////////////////////////

    -ian

    ///////////////////////////////////////////////

    (GilJaysmith @ Nov.18 2002,10.01)
    Find the entry for Medieval on your start menu or desktop, rightclick and select Properties, and find the Target box, which should have something like "C:\Program Files\Total War\Medieval - Total War\Medieval_TW.exe" in it. Add -ian to the end of this so it looks like this:

    "C:\Program Files\Total War\Medieval - Total War\Medieval_TW.exe" -ian

    (your exact path may vary)

    And that's the "PR" mode enabled. Now in this mode there may (ECS was unsure and so am I) be further cheats enabled on the campaign map.
    If they are enabled you'll be able to find out quickly enough.

    Press # during a campaign and your faction will be controlled by the AI.
    Press # again and then press one of the keys 0-9 to take over control of one of the first ten factions, or hold down Shift and press 0-9 to take over one of the second ten.

    Press A and the game will start to autorun.
    If you start autorunning the keys will only be scanned every so often,
    and getting out of autorun can sometimes be tricky.
    Pressing A three times usually works :)

    Press Shift-# and you will be taken to the battlemap to witness all battles, not just your own.
    (or shift + @ or " depending on what window keyboard settings you have.)
    If you press Shift-# you'll see something like "View AI battles ON"; press it again and you'll see an equivalent OFF message.
    (NOTE: this function may not actually BE enabled - barocca)

    In all cases you should see a small message in red in the middle of the screen to tell you what you've just done.

    ///////////////////////////////////////////////

    (WesW @ Oct. 04 2003,15:24)
    In your VI desktop shortcut, right-click, and under Properties, either add the command -ian, or replace the word "strictserver" with "ian" (keep the hyphen).
    This enables God mode, which in turn enables a number of other commands. While in God mode:

    The F5 key toggles the Scenic tour, which I think lets you see improvements or army composition everywhere.

    CTRL+I toggles the inset map and screen panels.
    The default for this is on so you don't have to worry about it.

    The letter "a" puts the game in autorun, meaning the AI plays as all factions. I haven't tried it, but I assume the combo of it and the Scenic tour will let you view all AI moves. The letter "c" may do the same thing as "a".

    The # or ' keys let the AI take over your faction, so that you can see what it decides to make and do.

    The most useful switch, imo, is the combo of either CTRL or Shift and the numbers at the top of the keyboard, 0-9.
    They let you change the faction you control. CTRL does the first ten factions, and Shift the next ten.

    The g key toggles God mode on and off, so that you can resume playing the game normally. This works for saved games as well.

    Thus, if you want to do some really good observing really fast, toggle on God mode, let the game autorun for a while to see the general strategic changes, and then use the switches to control each of the factions.
    You can then see what they are building, what they aren't building, their troop strength and composition, and their current economic status.

    ///////////////////////////////////////////////

    You can bring a dead campagin to life again in no time, it's just a matter of switching to every single faction and using .deadringer. on them. Or raising a strong empire only to switch and play a weaker one.

    ///////////////////////////////////////////////

    this switch also completely frees (unrestricts) the camera for viewing replays, allowing you to go as close or as high as you wish,

    ///////////////////////////////////////////////

    -strictserver - used on the game host machine,

    ///////////////////////////////////////////////

    if game goes out of sync (a player goes out of sync) then the battle ends, without this switch the battle would continue and what you see, and what your oppenent sees are two entirely different things.

    ///////////////////////////////////////////////

    -loyalty:xxx
    -loyalty:130 sets the target tax for autotax to 130 instead of the default prepatch 100 or postpatch 150

    ///////////////////////////////////////////////

    -old_rebels
    with this there will be no tech level limit on the rebellion troop types.
    (the Patch changed Rebellions to NOT produce troops that require technology that the faction in question does not possess,
    this stopped late era units appearing in early era rebellions)

    ///////////////////////////////////////////////

    -D
    (Giljay) Run Medieval in its debug window.

    You do this by modifying the shortcut to add the letter D (it must be a capital D) as a command-line option.

    Skip the following bit if you already know how to modify a shortcut:

    - Find the shortcut you use to run MTW.

    - Right-click on it and select "Properties".

    - You should see a tabbed popup box which somewhere on it will say "Target" with a box containing the path to the MTW exe. For example, mine says "C:\Program Files\Total War\Medieval - Total War\Medieval_TW.exe" which is the default install path.

    - Add a space and the capital D to the end of this text. In this case mine would say:

    "C:\Program Files\Total War\Medieval - Total War\Medieval_TW.exe" D

    - Then click OK or Apply, and run the game.

    You should set your desktop resolution at something higher than 800x600, since the debug mode will use a rectangle that size at the top left of the screen to display the menus. (If you run the campaign map or battlemap at a higher resolution, it will start using a rectangle at that higher resolution whenever you switch to those parts of the game.)

    The menu system always runs in 800x600, so if your desktop is at a higher resolution, you will basically have some (possibly tons of) room left on the desktop to see other window activity.
