Quote[/b] (frogbeastegg @ Aug. 29 2003,05:43)]If you'd ever played thief or thief 2 you'd recognise it as the name of one of the most dangerous and amusing enemies - the frog beast. In thief 1 frog beasts were quite rare but very deadly. They are exploding frogs and they hop up next to you when you're not paying attention, the first you know is the frog noise right next to you shortly before the frog exploded. There's something undeniably funny about ribit, ribit BOOM
In thief 2 you could collect frog beast eggs, they acted like hand grenades. All you had to do was chuck them at an enemy and keep far away from the ensuing chaos as the frog followed the enemy around like a pet before blowing up, all the time the enemy would be trying to hit the frog beast, often with no success. Better still you didn't get blamed for the frog beasts kills so you could use them on levels where killing wasn't allowed.
They were nasty little beggars. If they got close you would shortly be redecorating the walls and they were very hard to hit from a distance because they are so small, if they were next to you it was even harder to hit then with your sword. Oh and they could hop long distances very quickly, so running away wasn't much of an option most of the time. The real fun came when there were several frog beats in an area with some other enemies, if you shot one with a fire arrow it would start a chain reaction of exploding frogs killing anything close by and blowing down destructible scenery.
When I was choosing my name I was racking my brains for hours, by chance I started flicking through my old thief 2 book when I saw the bit on frog beast eggs. I thought it sounded quite catchy if you ran it together and it was certainly distinctive. The rest, as they say, is history
If you want to read the original (there's a whole advert for the Thief games, they should be on everyone's play list) it's
here.
I suppose I can extend the free drinks offer just a little longer....
