Thread: Uploading pictures to the org

  1. #1

    Lightbulb

Monk's edit: Hey guys. This isn't in use anymore. Thanks.

Very important note: I (frogbeastegg) am no longer in charge of the story upload service. The staff member you want to talk to is Ludens.

I have the pleasure of announcing a new feature for the org - the upload manager. This service allows patrons to upload their pictures to the org for hosting. Firstly the rules:

    1. This service is for use in the Mead Hall and Throne Room only. No signatures, babe pics or other junk, only the pictures needed for PBM reports, the screenshot thread, or anything related to a current story thread. There is limited space so please do not abuse it with useless pictures.

    2. Keep your files small. Again we have limited space and the smaller the files hosted the more that can fit on. As TosaInu says No need to post a 500 kb jpg when a 80 kb gif can show the same. Nothing above 2MB will be accepted and you should avoid files this big as far as possible.

    3. Keep your pictures to a considerate size. Not everybody has a giant monitor capable of displaying high resolutions so keep your images small enough to fit on the screen without distorting the orgs layout - if it makes the post look wider than this one the picture is too big and should be reduced to a smaller size. Try to be considerate.

    4. Run a virus scan on any zip file before submitting it. We will not be very amused if we end up infected with a virus because you didn't take a few seconds to check your file.

    5. Please convert the files into JPEGs (or similar) yourself. There are instructions directly below on how to do this using free software. If you have problems converting ask for help and we will do our best. Basically there are three reasons why you don't want us to convert your files: Firstly we might crop away something you wanted to keep or alter the picture in a way you don't like. Secondly we are quite busy and we don't have the time to do everyone's TGAs for them, we will do the odd one or two as long as you ask for permission first. Thirdly the converted files are much smaller so you are more likely to be able to upload them successfully.

    7. Don't put symbols or spaces in your file names. This one is very important - if you put a symbol or space in the file name you will not be able to use the uploader will refuse it. So use plain letters and numbers only, no ? * % or anything like that.

Please put your name somewhere in the filename. This is not a rule more of an insurance policy to make my (and yours) life easier. Some files get corrupted on upload and there is nothing I can do with them except delete them. Trying to find the owner of a file called 'stuff.zip' is next to impossible and it wastes my time. Trying to find the owner of 'NTWstuff.zip' is easier - I know to hassle one of the NTW mod team. Finding the owner of 'frogbeasteggstuff.zip' is easy. If I know who the file belongs to I can send them a short message telling them the file is corrupted, please resubmit. The limit on file name length is very generous so please put your name before the name of the individual pictures, for example 'frogbeasteggpics.zip' containing 'frogbeasteggVikings.jpg', 'frogbeasteggcharge.jpg' and 'frogbeasteggSamurai'jgp'. This also has the bonus of making it easier for you to find your pictures after they are hosted. Remember the org's coding doesn't get on with symbols, if your name contains one of these characters you will have to leave it out.

So the basic rule is size matters and smaller is much, much better.

How to convert your TGA into JPEG and resize it to fit the screen.
First download Paint Shop Pro from this site, you want the free evalutation version. Now open your TGA (found in the MTW/TGA folder with paint shop pro. To resize, click on image -> resize and choose percentage of original. To have the image fit into the usual post-width set both dimentions to 70%, then click OK. If your picture has a lot of unnecessary space on it you should crop it down as this will make it look better as well as make it smaller. To do this click on crop on the left hand tool bar and then drag out a box on your picture. When you are happy with the boundaries (anything outside the box will be lost) double click outside the box and the picture will be cropped. The final step you need is to save the picture in it's edited forum so click on file -> save as. Now enter a name and click on the menu next to save as type and scroll until you see JPEG, click on it to select JPEG format. Now click save and you are done

    How to upload your files.
Click on the following link to be taken to the upload page and follow the instructions, they are quite straight forward but if you need help post here and it will be explained. As the page says the staff must first unzip and upload your pictures to the org so don't expect them to be available instantly. We will try to keep a rapid turnover but we have lives of our own so try to be patient.

Important: Please wait for the uploader itself to report the upload as complete. Some browsers are reporting the upload as complete when it is not. This leads to your file getting corrupted and your screenshots will be ruined.

    Upload manager

After you have uploaded your pictures, PM the staff and they will move them to the public folder at the earliest possible moment.

How to post your picture when it is on the org.
Check this page after submitting your file. When the staff have added your file to the storage space it will appear here so make sure you give it a distinctive name. If you click on your file it will take you to a page where the picture is displayed. The address of this page is the one you need to post the picture in a topic so copy it and then it your post hit the image button in the create post screen (it's right next to quote and above the box where you type your posts) and paste the address into it and then hit ok. If you have done this correctly your picture should be displayed properly but use preview post to be sure, if there is a problem the picture will appear as a box with a red cross rather than your exciting picture. If this happens check your address again to make sure it is correct. Once again if you need help post here.

This is an excellent feature IMO. I was actually gunna post about file hosting and stuff. I feel a bit bad constantly harassing kukrikahn to host my screenies.

    Should make things easier.

Thats a nice feature and I am sure many members will find it useful

    Great job guys

For those who were wondering about reduction ratios... Reducing a Screenshot Image to 85% of its original size will bring it down to a nice file size without distorting The Orgs Layout.

    Konnichiwa,

About 500 pixels wide is great, but larger is ok with me. I'm sure that you'll sort out what works best.

This topic is intended for avatars and sig pics, but it may be of use for these pictures too http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin....5;st=25

A bit filecompression should allow space for more and/or larger images.

PSP has optimizers, but you could also try this one.

TosaInu has tweaked the filemanager to accept gif, png, jp(e)g, swf (flash) and bmp format files as well as zips, so you can now upload your stuff in those formats. Please remember that there is a size limit of 2MB so anything naturally larger than that must be zipped. If it comes to more than 2MB when it's zipped you will still have to contact us for help.

All of the rules (except the one that demands zipped files, of course) still apply so please make sure your file meets them.

EDITED: Er, well this is kind of embarrasing but will the owner of peas.zip please resubmit their picture. I seem to be having technical difficulties and all of the org hosted screenies have turned into a logo. Sorry I thought it was a signature clip because it looked like an advert for the org Will try to fix this so the screenie service gets back on track.

What's the matter? All the pictures have turned into a totalwar.org textbar.
I've seen this before in the screenshots-thread, but then it just of question of clicking refresh untill the pictures you want to see turn up (it was annoying though). I've never seen it happen to ALL the pictures.

Is it something about my computer, is the internet to crowded or something like that?

I had that problem after reinstalling my system, I managed to solve it with some help from TosaInu. The org picture hosting uses an anti-leeching system and you must have refers enabled to view the screenshots hosted on the org. If refers are disabled you see an org logo instead.

Somewhere on your PC will be an option to enable refers, it could be in your internet security settings, your firewall etc. Once it is enabled all the pictures should show every time. In my case it was Norton personal firewall 2002 causing the problem.

I hope that makes sense, if you need more help I'm sure someone more technically competent can think of something.

My attempt at the technical definition: A thing (setting maybe?) that allows a site to check you are actually on the site before displaying a picture. This prevents people from stealing a picture and posting it on another site without using their own bandwidth, in essence acting like a leech. TosaInu explained it much better

My attempt at a more user friendly definition: An annoying setting that took me the best part of an hour to find

Well don't take this explanation as 100% accurate; I'm just the filing amphibian for the story space. With that disclaimer in place:

As far as I am aware there are 3 different spaces available each with a different purpose.
    1. The story space. According to the description given to me along with the passwords for the filemanager this space is for screenshots needed for the two new forums. Signature pics etc were on the 'don't allow' list, hence me saying they are not allowed. If something is put through the uploader linked in the first post in this topic it ends up in the story filemanager and I transfer it over to the actual hosting space. The space is 25MB total with 15.6MB used.

    2. The frog space is just a small 10MB space where I put the screenshots for my guides. The only people with access to this space are TosaInu and myself. I can give the password to assistants if I want but so far there is no need. To put anything in this space you have to log into the filemanager using the correct name/password for this space and then manually upload it. That is the only (as far as I know) way for anything to get to this space.

    3. There is a third space I know very little about. All I know is that this space has a signature pic on it and no one manages it in the same way as the story space. I have no idea how to get anything onto that space. This is probably the space TosaInu was talking about for avatars and signature pics.

There could be another 100 spaces out there I don't know about. I don't know what order they were set up in, what the relative sizes are etc. To be honest this doesn't bother me - there is a limit to how much filing you want to do Two sets of log ins and passwords for essentially the same thing is fine, any more and I’d probably get them mixed up

    Ave Scipio,

Just consider the server to be like your harddisk. There's a maindirectory patrons. Inside that directory are sub-directories, each having a different purpose and storing different kind of files. story is used for pictures like screenshots for story/pbm.
There's also a sub-directory pbm so people can share saved campaigns and don't have to rely on e-mail only.

Each directory 'has' an uploadtool so anyone can upload files. Each directoy also 'has' a more powerful Explorer like tool so an administrator, like frogbeastegg, can manage the space and keep it tidy. Moving, deleting, renaming and stuff like that.

There already is a space for avatars ( http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/pics/ ), but there isn't anyone yet to keep an eye on it. It won't be a days job, even if it becomes very popular, but I fear the worst if I have to look at it myself.

Volunteers are most welcome. If you like to add a picture there now, it should be called P_Scipio. for SigPics and A_Scipio. for the avatar to avoid me getting confused.
    Either gif or jpg.
You can use http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Up...RCMTWFinal.php for now, but it may take a few days before the pics become available. Zip the files please.

Feel free to ask if you need more information.

Hey, changing the refers-setting of my firewall also solved this problem. Strange though, that it would only block some of the pictures.

Perhaps it should be mentioned in the screenshots thread?
But I should really stop spamming THIS thread.
