A clan is an organized group of players who wish to fight as a team for a more enjoyable experience. Most clan members have a common identifier, called a tag, in their name. That's basically all the clans have in common with one another. Some are very inclusive, others are ultra-elite. Some are small, others are large. Some recruit based on skills, others on friendship. Some clans must be asked to join, others ask you to join them. All clans are different in some way or another.

Just to summarize what I said in another thread just an hour ago: if you think you want to join a clan, take your time. Don't rush it or you may find yourself in a bad situation. Not that any clan is bad, but people have different compatibilities. Take your time (weeks, not days) and find a clan that fits well with your goals in online play and that you and them have a mutual liking of each other.

The idea of a clan seems interesting to me to, but I'll admit that in clans things do go wrong.
