When Xerxes wrote again: 'Deliver up your arms,' he wrote back: 'Come and take them.'

He passed the word to his soldiers to eat breakfast in the expectation that they would be having dinner in Hades.

best book on the fall of roman britain & the initial acts of the sucessor states is without doubt - John Morris, Age of Arthur; History of the British Isles 350-650CE
it's prolly be cheaper at Amazon than:
    http://www.phillimore.co.uk/acatalo....14.html

but that ends before the fun internecine fighting & the Viking's invasion so ...

    You could try:

Barbarians and Romans: The Techniques of Accommodation by W. Goffart

The Fall of the Roman Empire: The Military Explanation by A. Ferrill

The Later Roman Empire, 284-602 by A.H.M. Jones

Though not specifically about the Germanic 'peoples', they are scholarly works about the period in question that have to address their impact on the Roman Empire.
