Thread: Boring, Repetitive and Predictable Multiplayer

    It goes like this;

line up Pavises against each other. Guy who moves into range first loses after half an hour of tedious Pavise vs Pavise fighting.

If you haven't fallen asleep after this, cavalry at wings try to outflank each other until one side is so bored he charges in out of frustration.

After that there's such a mish-mash of colors you can't really tell what's happening.

I found battles most repetive when playing on steppe maps..especially the pav battles. When there are hills and woods things are suddenly a lot more interesting.

Manuevering into a good position for your missile to shoot at enemy melee units..defending a hill with half your army while sending other half to help ally..things like that.

    Yeap CA got it wrong.

    CBR got it right though.

Also who you play with makes a difference. Some just can't/won't play anything but steppe. It helps if you have some understaning of what kind (i.e desert skirmish, lush hill assualt...etc) of game both parties are looking for, before you start playing.

Another thing is the florin level..yes another 5k rant coming up

Pavs with 3 armour upgrades is also pretty boring and at 5k you normally dont see many upgrades, yes even pavs is not standard (25 florins can be used soemwhere else)

Otherwise I would say CA got it right..of course some things could always be changed, but they cant balance a game for all kinds of florin levels and people just have to live with that.

I think it boils down to people being afraid to lose. Thus the aversion to anything but a flat fair map and selection of safe armies, i.e. pav armies. Heaven forbid your opponent have an advantage over you.

Yes a lot of people consider steppe to be fair and yes you could say that is correct as no one has an advantage because of terrain.

But the defender will still have some advantage. The attackers might not coordinate the rush properly so line will get staggered, he is the one moving into missile range and taking casualties.

Not all maps are great of course but some are and gives both advantages and disadvantages to both sides and that gives the most dynamic battles.

ugh. I think the best way is to have an army where you can pick 6 units, then you get random for the rest. Florins around about 8-9k. If someone is defending then give them less florins. i regularly play LAN where the defender has approx 2/3 of the florin.

It's not the 'perfect' army, but what army is? I like having to decide where to put the urban militia, or peasants I've ended up with.

It also seems to me a better way of testing your mettle as a general.

More fun, anyway, than pinning the enemy with your wall of chivalric sargeants and flanking with the cavalry.

MP can be great fun, but you have to agree a scenario by chatting then play it mirrored. much better.

Pav wars result from both players agreement to have a pav war.

If you are in a pav war you don't like, you can only blame yourself.

Regardless of whether CA got it right or wrong, you are free to make your own rules.

I have seen players using a max. 4 units of the same type rule. Likewise you could set up a max 2 Pav units rule or a no Pav rule or whatever in order to adjust for whatever you think is unbalanced.

Good thing is, you dont have to play the settings of the game but can make your own adjustments.

    Louis,
That is very true... if you are not enjoying the pav war you are in to come up with ways to break this standing range war... feel free to experiment

Then again you can always opt for banning or limiting all pavise

*thinks regular arblasters should have been kept in high era, a nice counter to pavise crossbows*

Or set up an early game No pavs, no problem
War is not about who is right, only about who is left

Having a point of view upon everything is good
Having a view upon every point is better
