why aren't there any in the game?? clearly the WM use nagamaki but it is said that it was much more dangerous for the enemy when used mounted on a horse because it could be weilded in a 'figure eight' pattern over the horses neck and was great when surrounded or trying to punch through enemy lines....

probably because there is already a similar unit in the game that would make nagamaki cav redundant

The tools wielded by the Naginata Cavalry have actually always looked like nagamaki to me. It's pretty hard to tell the difference between a naginata and a nagamaki sometimes, anyway.

My guess is that Naginata Cav are true Nagamaki. Naginata are supposed to be heavily armored - and thus they would be mounted tanks. Nagamaki are more offensive, as the Nagi cav in Shogun are described. Best bet is that the devs used the term Naginata term due to it being easily confused with Nagamaki by us English speakers, otherwise it would have caused alot of confusion between Naginata (Infantry) and Nagamaki cavalry.

Nagamaki are similiar, but not identical to Naginata. Naginata are the equivialant to a true Polearm of European nature, usually with a curvature or hook or other notch that allows them to grab an enemy (usually off a horse) and pull/thrust them. A Nagamaki on the other hand, actually appear more like a Nodachi fastened to a roughly 3' haft. It has no design implicit to fighting a horseman, and is designed more as an offensive weapon as compared to the Naginata and its defensive attributes. Combining a nodachi with additional weight and a very odd "balance", a Nagamaki would be EXTREMELY unweildy to use except on horseback, and even then would be extremely heavy and tiring. Thus - the reason such a warrior would not have the armor of a Naginata as well.

no heavier than a sword blade, although apparently oddly balanced for fighting on foot ..

yes, actually, BSM you are probably right. can you imagine using a naginata while mounted on a horse? It would be basically impossible.
