    Question

Any lore masters of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice & Fire series hang around on this board? I could use some help in the form of ideas for units for a few factions:

House Stark and Targaryen are easy enough. But, I need a couple of ideas for Houses Baratheon(Storm's End), Lannister(Casterly Rock), and Greyjoy(Iron Isles).

Having lots of trouble(ie. no clue) coming up with units for Houses Tyrell(High Garden), Tully(Riverrun), Arryn(Eyrie) and Dorne. I may just end up making these into minor factions except for House Tyrell.

Also, here's an early look at the campaignmap(not final yet):

I've not heard of that series, but it looks like you've got a nice mod in the making. Good looking map.

    Hi Tama ,

    very interesting project...

I agree that it is rather difficult to come up with unique units for each of the factions, judging from the books the armies do not differs too much.

For House Greyjoy some Viking-like units will probably make sense (e.g. fast ships, Huscarls)

For the Dornish (I would love to play them) a strong spearman unit and perhaps a focus on lighter armored units (similar to the muslim factions in MTW) might make sense.

If possible it would be great to see some Unsullied that can only be hired as merceneries...

Sorry, that I cannot provide more ideas

Good luck going forward with your mod

That looks very nice Tama but it doesn't rival Duke Dicks Mod yet.

Yea, the detail of my mod isn't up to par with Duke Dick's mod. The detail in his mod is quite astounding.

I was actually thinking of including the Unsullied along with Dothraki horse units to make up House Targaryen. In turn making Targaryen an invasion force from the east rather than the old reign of Aegon.

The vikings for the Greyjoy units and muslim for dornish are great ideas.

There are only 4 time periods I could model this mod on:
The Andal Invasion, The Age of Heroes(Brandon the builder), The War of the Usurper, and the current storyline.

War of the Usurper would have been nice, but there isn't enough information from the novels.

I'm leaning on a variation of the current storyline with some changes to fit the mod better. Most of my ideas came from A Game of Thrones - Collectable Card Game which also has some variations of its own.

I agree with you that the current storyline will probably be the easiest to realize due to the given amount of information (also it will likely be more fun to play factions you are more familiar with).

The idea for the Targaryens as invasion force sounds great (sounds like a lot of fun leading an army of Unsullied and Dothraki into battle against knight).

Looking forward to upcoming news about your mod

    Hi all,
First post, so bear with me, had to jump in because of the GRRM theme
Tarna, like the idea of mod with Ice and Fire.
As mentioned, Greyjoys as Viking-esque, perhaps Riverun akin to English in MTW with good bowmen (remember the funeral scene where the Blackfish shoots flaming arrow?)

Perhaps house Tyrell could produce talented knight units akin to the Knight of Flowers?

Lannister might produce excellent swordsman akin to Ser Jaime?

    Good idea and good luck

We were all true n00bs at one time.

Lurk if you wish, but it would be great to hear what you've got to say on topics that interest you too. Don't be shy - shout out I am chookmustard, and I've got something to say

    Just an update...

I'm still working on it, I had a major set back when one of my hard drives died(the one with my MTW installs DOH&#33 but most of that stuff was just me testing what I could do.

The campaign map is pretty much done except for some minor border changes maybe and has about 49 land regions and 17 sea regions. It's pretty much the same size as the VI map. Ah yes... forgot to mention this mod will be for VI

I'm currently assigning units to the various factions.(geez I thought this would be the easy part)

Each faction will have certain advantages in types of units.

    For example:
Lannister infantry armies are all 100(base unit size) and most of its units are well equiped.

Targaryen has similar advantages with horse units with them being large in size and move faster. Other than the Unsullied, their infantry units are weak.

Tully will be a missile based army with weaker/normal sized(60) melee units.

Tyrell will have advantages in Knight type units.

Each House will also have a 100 or 96 base sized troop for spear/pike units. Unsullied acts as this for Targaryen.

Thanks for some of the ideas guys.

    Howdy, also my first post...

I'm a huge fan of the series you speak of...read it twice even Can't wait until the fourth book comes out, but it keeps getting delayed

Your campaign map looks really awesome man, nice work. First of all I think that it should be set during the current events detailed in the series, anything else would be too much guesswork IMHO. In terms of suggestions, the books have a geneology for the major houses, can those be incorporated into the generals/royalty that the sides get in terms of names and stats and such? Also the Iron men from the salt isles would be a very cool viking type side, whereas the house of Stark could be a cross between a western european and a viking type. Perhaps Stannis Baratheon's holdings in the Dragon isles can be a minor side. Another cool minor faction could be the black brotherhood of the wall up north, and perhaps some sort of bizzare unit mix that would consist of raiders(the others) from beyond the wall. Another interesting idea may be to include the various fighting types that are mentioned in Daenaerys' (sp?) travels as mercenaries available for hire in the seven kingdoms. Actually including her faction would probably be unbalanced, as it would act like the Viks do in the expansion pack, aggressive challengers that have no threat to their existance at all...too easy for a player side but may be fun for a computer side...so on second thought, it would be nice to include, but I know that I for one wouldn't play em cuz it would be too easy...but it would be nice for them to make raids Other than that I would suggest that the lands up north around the holdings of house Stark be either very large territory-wise, very rebellious or very poor, -- more likely a combination of the three -- because the amount of land that house Stark owned would otherwise unbalance them in relation to other houses. Err...I'll post more if I think of more, but for now, damn cool idea for a mod man, I'd love to play it

I am a fan reborn ( just finishing the re-reading of the books).
It seems you give me something else to wait for besides the next title of the series.
In the ideas department, I would only suggest you put a strong and colourful mercenary element ( Brave Companions,Stormcrows, Second Sons, Unsullied, Dothraki, etc...),a Wildling faction ( the celtic units fit not too bad )and well-built areas from the start ( the age is not one of building and development ).
    Thanks for your efforts,
    Gonzalo.
