I was just wondering. Will there be any naval warfare in this?

I would be curious what many Shogun fans would expect from high sea naval battles in the add-on. Although slightly more traditional sea battles were fought in the invasion of Korea (mostly the Koreans being the ones with the more modern designed ships, 13th century naval warfare (really up to and including the Sengoku period) wasn't really that exciting and often showed that most samurai were schooled in ground warfare and couldn't think 'outside the box'.

Take Dan-no-ura, the largest and most important naval battle the Japanese had at this point in their history (which occured roughly a century before the Mongols invaded). It started off with skirmishes of boats coming into arrow range and firing before retreating, followed later by the two fleets coming together and fighting what could best be described as a land battle on swaying ships, often having to leap from vessel to vessel. Not necessarily the most ingenious use of naval power. During the invasion, the Japanese didn't fight and win any serious sea battles...unless you count the sneak attacks by small groups of samurai who rowed/sailed out to the larger Mongol ships and boarded them...but again, it was more skill and tactics when using your feet than any naval brilliance.

I would be interesting to see if any of the shore maps allow one side to begin at sea, with the ability to move their troops in (the boat replacing the walking) while archer units could still fire. Of course, the troops in a boat would be in the same predicament as troops on a bridge...all bunched up with no place to go.

I think that if the people at CA/DT were considering adding full-scale sea warfare in the expansion, they would have mentioned it. It's a major feature, after all (some might think it's a new *game* of its own). However, some kind of beach invasion scenarios à la Steel Panthers, like Naomasa-sama suggested, are well within the realm of possibility.

Maybe by the time we get to Total War: Napolean.
