But how do you make your general ransom off prisoners after they are captured?(I am talking about medieval total war) I see three buttons, release them all, execute the ringleaders, and execute themall...I had assumed release them all does it, but I haven't seen my money change any or see a message saying my general had ransomed them off, despite the fact that I had captured well over a 1000. Anyone help me with this?
You can't ransom back rebels, only troops from other factions, the computer will try and ransom them back automatically anyway.

The effect of executing them all is to give the general a chance of increased dread and your king a chance to acquire a v&v which increases his dread. The effect of releasing them all is to give your king a chance to acquire an occasionally merciful v&v which increases happiness throughout the realm.
And that one can be improved by further acts of mercy.
Once the king acquires these v&vs he keeps them and he can perfectly well have two contradictory ones. So mix and match. Sometimes kill all the prisoners and sometimes free them all.
I suspect (but have not tested to confirm) that the kill the ringleaders option has no v&v effect.
You can increase dread and garner additional v&vs another way - by killing prisoners during battle. There is an icon on the left of the screen showing the number of prisoners taken so far and if you click on it your men execute them all. There is a specifiv V&v which is acquired by killing 1,000 so if you face a sizeable mass of rebel peasants and fanatics that offers a good chance (if you are bloodthirsty enough) to acquire that one.
In a battle against another faction (rather than against rebels) killing the prisoners denies you the chance that they will be ransomed afterwards.
I think selecting the kill the ringleaders execution option when you defeated Rebels can result in the Occasional Mercy V&V. At any rate, I read that if you release the captured Rebels, you will have more lyalty in the region. I guess everyone is happy that you spared their loved ones after smashing the uprising, and that maybe you aren't so bad afterall....

When I conquor a rebel province I typically release all the prisoners the first time. However, if they rebel after that, then I adopt the attitude of Sir Lawrence of Arabia (you know the scene where he and his arab troops stumble upon the turks after they have massacred a bunch of civilians)

It's possible to get the vice Random Justice, which has a negative effect. The text is along the lines of, The random nature of the justice dispensed by this general makes his subjects uncertain, they tread warily around him - 10% happiness or something
I think I've only seen it a few times, and with faction leaders only.
Just decide whether the responsible general is a nice guy or not.
Usually I kill the ringleaders if there are any nobles, otherwise I let the all go, unless it's a particularly troublesome province - then I make an example of them - bwahahahahaaha

Yep ...Random Justice, not good, your ruler makes decisions according to his mood swings. Better to make your choice to be kind hearted or cruel.....so kill them all rebel or rival faction

See, but thats the strange thing I have noticed. I have killed rebel prisoners in battle and after killing enough of them my general got a vice(I can't recall what its called off hand..Swift justice maybe?) that gave him a penalty to morale because he executed rebels and his men got no share of the ransom. From what I understand, however, there is no ransom to be had How could he get this vice by killing rebels when he has no one to ransom them to.
