I am not a noob, nor a veteran, but I was just wondering certain things. Does the Pope's piety effect the excommunications? Will a more pious Pope be more willing to excommunicate? Does the Pope's Influence do anything other than effect diplomacy? Is there anything else important about the Pope's stats?

I thought the pope's deal was pretty easy to understand. If you attack a catholic faction smaller then you, he warns you. If you attack him, he excoms you on the spot. And the only way to really 'influence' the pope is to make him the corpse of a pope.

i kill him ASAP, otherwise you end up fighting with one arm tied behind your back.

the pope`s only job is to maintain the status quo as regards christian countries, if you knock things out of whack you get xcomed.

I thought that even if you attack a smaller country there was only a chance of excommunication. I know you can be only warned against one country at a time. I just thought that the Pope would be less willing to excommunicate you for attacking a smaller faction if he wasn't religious.

    Thanks for the replies though1

Thanks for the welcomes guys. I glad you like my sig. It will probably be changed from time to time; I'm full of those type of quotes. ( If you don't like my driving, get off the sidewalk )

The Pope's stats don't seem to influence anything, but he is fairly easy to manipulate.

When I'm playing as a Muslim faction, I like to invade Rome and The Papal States, raze them to the ground, fill them with alims and then abandon them to rebel before the Pope reappears. He usually spends the rest of the game so busy fighting off Islamic revolts that he's too preoccupied to bother anyone. And you can always Jihad against him after that if the mood takes you.

In my current English game I've had him in my pocket since being excommunicated early on for wiping out the French. Once that king died (he lived until 72 as an excommunicated old man... why, God... why?) and I was back in the Catholic fold, I started crusading against whoever the Pope hated. Not only does he sanction the crusades for free, but he now loves me more than anyone else and is the only person who's remained allied to me no matter what the other countries are doing. Just for that I'll save killing him until last.

I'm trying to decide whether it's cheesy tactics to attack someone small like the Danes or Aragonese to get your Papal warning before smiting your true foe or not, but it can get very tedious waiting for an excommunication that might never happen otherwise, or killing someone in waves.
