I just started playing MP MTW and the first Thing I have to say is. ART RULZ

No one expects it, and when it massacres thier valor 4 armour 3 weapon 3 chivs as if they were peasants then they agree with me. Why is it so looked down on in games. It is a very good stratagy. I just need to work on my tactics of protecting them. I think pikes will do the job.

Why don't more people use art in MP??? (and don't say its crap cause I have tried it and know it works)

    Hello Efrem Da King,

I do use art at times: serpentines in Late, catapults in High. They can do a lot of damage. But protecting is indeed a bit of a problem.

Some people use the no art rule in games. There's something to say for that and it's something to respect when you join such a game.

It can be a lot of fun with explosives though. Kraellin made a mortar mod for STW and he tried to make explosive shells for art in MTW, but it corrupted his exe

You need to think art like this.

If you hadnt taken a unit of artillery, you'd probably taken an infantry unit or cav unit. Is it worth exchanging a unit of h2h with artillery? Will it manage to get the kills that a foot or horse unit would get you? If the answer is yes, then art is for you.

I think it waste of time in high period unless for fun, yes u can get kills but an experienced player will attack u as soon as possible, and now u have less hth units

Only time i fear artillery is when players all corner camp with arty, but those peeps arent even worth bothering about.

Late period artillery works well, there is no doubt about it. People dont like it exactly because it works In other words it is considered as a cheap shot by many.

Artillerly is only worthwhile when your enemy attacks you close to where your artillerly is positioned... in most other situations its a liability...

People (like me) dont like it because it devalues the game into a 1st person shooter game rather than a stratrgy game, People that take arty also camp (cause arty dont move) and if you camp and shoot its little interest or fun....'Unreal' was a better shooter game.

artillery dosent fit my normal mode of play...which is attack...as i move around too much. however, something should be said for the demoralization capabilities of cannon, much like the occasional napatha's i sometimes include. when the terrain makes for a contration of men, like a bridge battle, i will bring serps or cullies, but this is only because the situation calls for it. stereotypically the cannon user is an unworthy camper though. dont let the big green bar fool you, those early casualities have little effect, especially if you are 2 units short of your attacker.

catapults is naughty when defending, for it creates an unfair advantage for the defender:a catapult cannot be moved up with the attackers line. cannon, due to their range, can be used by attacker and defender and so i dont find it too troublesome.

I dont mind people using art. The morale effect is usually bigger on the player than on his units heh...people making silly rushes because they feel they are getting shot to pieces.

But its a shame that you cant move it. It could be a nice anti camper weapon (several examples from history heh)

Exactly it forces a desicion. Of course I only use it in late, when I use serps and thats cause they look so damn cool.

If everyone used all their choices as h2h you'd get a pretty gay game if you ask me. If course artillery is better in single player, because to be good it must have high valour. Low valour is useless high valour can sheer jedi kings into a pulp in seconds and rout entire armies.

    Hello Efrem Da King,

Does valour have much influence on art 'killing' in SP?

    Ohh sooo much

about 5 valour 7 or above "decent" cannon (culverin, demi-culverin and serp) can massacre armies before they get anywhere near your battle lines. And I mean 100s killed as well as generals of any valour. THis is in the dessert of course, completly flat giving cannon range of the entire map practically.

That is true, valour has a great meaning on artillery usability. Although arty is only useful, when there is at least 3 of them, people who take 1 cannon for mp games, totally waste their cash. The big minus of cannons and serpentines is of course the fact, that they can't shoot in rain... Same thing is with musketeers...
Arty can be useful when it's used properly, but as it was said earlier, the main reason for many "no arty" games, is that it's used by campers, who just camp there at the end of the map and want to shoot you out.

A big reason that some people do not like arty is that it seems like it adds lag to the game. I don't really care if others bring it (unless they are my ally and we on attack and the arty turns out to be useless), actually one of my favorite parts of game is sending a cav unit to smash the arty and rout the crew.

There are times when arty is ok, but for the most part I agree with Swoosh and lahll and Temp

I started a poll on this topic that has some interesting posts:
