    Question

As most of you know, some of CA's approach, doesn't quite match the history of the Byzantine Armies, in regarding to unit types.

What I would like to know is:
-Has anyone in the forums tackled the historical accuracy problem of the Byzantine units???

    If so, please reply.
    Answers will be greatly appreciated

    To the Moderators:
Since I can't post in the Dungeon, would any of you be so kind as to transfer this post there ???
    Thank you in advance...

I believe that being historically accurate was a concern for the developers...making the gameplay balanced was even more so. If the developers made the byz empire historically accurate the number one goal, any gamer with a sense of strategy and tactics would take over the map very quickly. IMHO

That is an excellent point. The Byzantine units were very disciplined and had plenty of experience. If it wasn't for the internal corruption that forced them to rely on mercenaries, who knows what the Balkans might look like today.

WesW's MedMod has expanded upon the original lineup of Byz units even to the point of giving them more traditional names.

    Trebizond Archers - Psiloi
    Byzantine Lancers - Stratiatoi
    Heavy Foot - Kontaratoi

    (spelling?)

I'm sure there are other mods that have focused on this as well.

Byzantine armies are actually heavily unaccurated but the fact is that after the battle of Manzikert, when the Empire lost about all its anatolian lands, its army entered a state of crisis heavily relying on light cavalry mercenaries (pechenegs, cumans, armens and even turkish ones) abandoning the heavy soldier concept of the Nikephorian (from Nikephoros Fokas, rebel first and basileus after ) army.

You can have a look at various wargaming sites (a good one is HOPLON Wargaming) to have a good review of the composition of the byzantine armies (and the ones of other factions) in the various era.

When I'll ever finish my mod they will be incorporated in it as I can't stand some of the unaccuracies (I'm not pricky it's just my middle-age history master that makes me so devious ).

Just so you know Lord Krazy did a mod some time back that added over a hundred units to the game. among these were a whole swag of byz units. the stats were not accurate though. the mod was only done for other members of the community to use. it wasup to them to do with what they wanted. I suggest if you want to add any new units to get this mod as all the hard work has been done for you.

The mod was the LKs community unit mod or something like that.

    LK's community mod thread.

here is the link to the thread.

Lord Aymar, if you wanna test some Byz units try out this mod: Byzantine units pack by NicSO v 1.1 (MTW).
Just tested it last night and seems pretty good, it brings some variety to the faction.

BTW tested you files and gave me some sort of error, something about a column with no values

    Really? Works fine with me

Wait, this may sound stupid, but do you have VI?

If you don't, the files won't work.

the thing is (if i read this right) imposing a time limit on some units would hurt the player whose constantinople never falls

but anyway (barring the cataphracts and infantry), if starting the later scenarios, the psiloi, or archers, should still be available, as well as some armoured lancers called stratiotai

nicaea should be able to hire the feudal knights unit, and have it called latinikon, since frankish mercenary knights were available and the romans should be able to hire turkopouloi in certain areas since the splinter states used them as well

spearmen were still available in areas

this is what i gather from this website, anyway
