anyone ever actually use them? I mean they take so long to get that it hardly seems worth the effort given their fairly bad stats... cavalry are generally used as shock troops but their charge sucks, they dont have armour pierce like teutons, their armour is good but slows them down so they arent fast flankers either.... they dont have the numbers of a unit of swordsmen... I just cant see any use for them at all.

With the cavalary that you´ll have at the time gendearms are preety worthless. Thats my opinion of course, i tend to use Chivalric cav. I used to build Gendarms mostly because i thought they looked good they didnt pack a punch though

All 3 factions that can get them have better alternative Knights. The French have +1 valor Chiv Knights in Toulouse, the Italians have Gothic Knights and the Spanish have Lancers.
From this, its very hard to see the point to them
Besides being an elite militian unit and looking completely bad (Meaning, of course cool), there is little point to them. I have modded it for lower build requirements and availability in high, so they now serve a purpose.

I haven't really found much use for them. Sometimes I have them in my armies just for variety. By the time you get access to them few battles are do-or-die-type anyway.
Well, their only advantage is training and support cost. They really aren't Knights, they're armoured horsemen of not noble lineage...
I'm seriously thinking about modding their melee and their requirements. If not, I agree, they aren't worth the bother...

I think they are a flavour unit like some others in the game. They are cheaper than Chiv Knights, have a lesser charge but about the same melee capability. Usually they are a byproduct when I tech up for pikemen, then you only need a master swordsmith and you can train good cavalry.
Generally speaking, I tend to use all units that are available to the faction I'm playing as.

My favorite unit Why you ask? When you reach the late era you want pikemen. You have probably reached the requirements to build them in most provinces. Now just add a master swordsmith and what do you have? LOADS and LOADS of superheavy cavalry. Most factions have only a few provinces for cavalryproduction at that stage, gendarmes are great. Viva la france
yes gendarm is better than feudal knight and comparable to chivaric knight but less charge and less armor. The charge bonus don't last long and don't different much. Someone I think have discount on them, so build them
