I think they are a flavour unit like some others in the game. They are cheaper than Chiv Knights, have a lesser charge but about the same melee capability. Usually they are a byproduct when I tech up for pikemen, then you only need a master swordsmith and you can train good cavalry.
Generally speaking, I tend to use all units that are available to the faction I'm playing as.
