Is the strategy component of Shogun based upon the old boardgame of the same name?

I never actually played it, but I had friends who did, and I observed one game a LONG time ago. The map and even playing pieces instantly reminded me of the boardgame.

    Does anybody have any answers?

I'm pretty sure it is based on the board game.

As far as I know, the Shogun board game was basically an "Axis & Allies" clone. They also had a Ancient Rome version and one or two others.

Wait until they run, they are easier to kill that way.

I remember that you started with your provinces scattered all over the map (ala Takeda and Imagawa in STW). I think I remember seeing archers and Yari troops as the starting pieces on the boeard, but I could be wrong...it was a LONG time ago.

I think it was made by the same company that made "Axis and Allies"

Shogun was in fact a board game. The strategic map is almost an exact copy of the board version as far as I can recall...

I have the boardgame for over 10 years now.
It's great! STW must be based on it....the map is almost the same.

The original boardgame was based on the James Clavell novel wasn't it?

I too have the boardgame. The rules are a bit like Axis & Allies with a strong emphasis on attack. Your Daymio gain level with each victory and can move more than 1 province at a time with his army if he has enough victory. You can raise an army of ronins that will fight for you for 1 turn and can hire a (very) deadly assassin that will stop a Daymio (and his army) for 1 turn.
Each players buys what he need in secrecy and certain things like wich player get to play first/last you can buy too.
Fun game at the beggining but 1 player get knock off pretty quickly.
