Thread: Simple question about movement

I've read the manual and can't seem to understand how one simple thing works: How do I tell a group to move to a location and then face in a certain direction? It seems that whenever I left click to a location, the formation completely changes. Does something go
awry when you click to a new destination without the current one having fully formed? I know the alt right and left click to change facing and move without changing face but how can I move and change face without losing formation? Thanks.

    Welcome to the ORG mgdpublic

The way I do it is I group all my army, scroll the camera to a location where I want my army to be and also look with my mouse in the direction I want my army to face. Then I click ALT+left click to move the army to the desired location.

It does work, most of the time. But sometimes my formation gets entirely jumbled up and I have to go and reset it unit by unit

So this is merely an intermediate solution.

    Cheers,
    Rev

Thanks for the welcoming. So there is no command for saying Go here and face this way? I can't believe that, it sort of seems like its the single most basic command.

I select the unit and then go the location I want then to and drag from Right to Left the line I want them to form and face.

If there is one, then I dont know it. And I do agree with you that it is one of the most essential commands for this kind of game, but maybe thats why CA implemented the ALT functions. We will never know

kiwitt, the problem arises whne you try to move an entire army Are you going to click and drag 16 units allthe time?

Yes just drag the line of selected units where you want them.

After 18 months of playing have never used the ALT commands. I move every unit individually.

Can you do the Ctrl select Units command and the ALT right to left mouse drag.

I'm not sure what you mean. Let's say I've got an entire army in formation and I want to move it forward and have it face in a different direction. How can I do that without losing the formation? There must be a command for this, how the hell do you guys manage your armies??

mgdpublic , read my earlier post. I use ALt+leftclick. Try it, then post what you think about it.

I think if you click on all your units, Group them, they will move in formation and keep formation...

From experience, the faster units will slow down and the slower ones will ??run? to keep formation. Try it

Anyway, if you want the entire army of units to move to a new locale and face a different direction from the path of advance... i have no idea, 'cept maybe use the drag units method.

I think the Alt+Left Click will move the units in Formation but they will face the direction of advance?? So, i suppose Rev is right...

    Nice talking to y'all...

    Welcome mgdpublic.

Check out the Battlefield Commands links in the Table of Contents topic in the Main Hall forum. Your answer should be in that plus a number of other I-didn't-know-that's.

With alt left click you can move a formation without changing its formation. Turning it to face a new direction is not as easy but can be done:

The alt left click can be done by just having the units selected. If you want a formation to change facing but keep overall formation then you have to group all the units into one large group, then you alt right click in the direction you want the formation to turn to.

So if you want to move the army to a certain destination and also have it change facing, you put your army into one group and use alt left click to move it and alt right click to change facing.
