    Hi,
After owning the Original STW for several years, I recently picked up and began playing the Warlord Edition.

    I have 2 questions:

    1. How do I retrain troops?

    2. Is it possible to use Battlefield Ninja in a full campaign? (I know tha manual says this is not possible - but I am pretty sure I've seen the AI use Ninja in my full campaign.)

    Thanks in Advance,

    Josh

You retrain units much in the same manner as in MTW, you opent he troop training window, click and drag the unit from the central bottom window to the trainign slot in the troop trianign window and then release the button. One turn later the unit has been brough back to full strength and get all the additional upgrades from that province.

Battlefield ninjas are available in a full campaign, but that campaign must be Sengoku Jidai, not the Mongol Invasion, perhaps that's where the manual is confusing.

    Thanks
I've never played MTW, and I must have missed the troop training slot...

The troop training slots look the same in STW and MTW. Normally when you open the training window, you pick what unit you want to create and it pops up in the troop training slots at the bottom (there's four of them).

To retrain, do as Brutal DLX says, click on the unit on the strategy map - it will show up in the window at the bottom centre of the screen. Click and drag it from here to the troop training slots, et voila, retrained unit next turn.

Look out for valour appearing to drop, this is to take into account the average of the new green troops and the hardened veterans. The vets will retain their high valour, and the average will go up more rapidly once you get into combat.

Yes, it is possible because I have been able to do it. I don't recal the manual saying that you cannot use battlefield ninja's in the campaign. Aren't you confusing battlefield ninja's (troops) with ordinary ninja's (assassins)? To build battlefield ninja's you'll need a battlefield ninja dojo, which requires a citadel, an infamous ninja house and a sword dojo. (Note: the battlefield ninja dojo is NOT an upgrade of the infamous ninja house, but a seperate building and requires a seperate building slot. Each province only has sixteen building slots, so don't try to build everything in one province)

That's a big issue for me when I have a great armory and/or metalsmith... then I want to train all my units there as they all will have these great attributes. Do you think that there's a way to mod the game so you can extend the building limit, or better yet get rid of it?
"And one should bear in mind that there is nothing more difficult to execute, nor more dubious of success, nor more dangerous to administer than to introduce a new order to things; for he who introduces it has all those who profit from the old order as his enemies; and he has only lukewarm allies in all those who might profit from the new. This lukewarmness partly stems from fear of their adversaries, who have the law on their side, and partly from the skepticism of men, who do not truly believe in new things unless they have personal experience in them."

In my version of STW WE it is possible to retrain any unit anywhere, even if that province cannot produce this specific unit. This may be a bug or overlooked, but it means that you can build your Ninjas elsewhere and retrain them in your armoury province to pump them up.
If it doesn't work in your version, you have to specialise your metal rich provinces. One for cavalry, one for infantry, one for special units like Kensai, gunpowder or battlefield Ninjas etc. There are enough such provinces to do this.

I do not believe you can retrain units anywhere, but I do believe you can reequip them anywhere. The funny thing is that when you retrain armour upgraded troops in a province without an armoury, the new recruits will still have armour upgrades (same for weapons, but not for honour. I guess improved morale and discipline are alos transfered).
Retraining kensia/battlefield ninja's might not be a good idea: upgrading them takes long (4 or 8 turns) and these units are pretty powerful without upgrades anyway.

I don't think so: the interface shows max 16 buildings: it would cause trouble if more were built. A trick that might be useful is that you can raze unnecesary building requirement buildings. I always raze the tranquil garden in my main troop-producing provinces: you don't need it to produce sohei, only to build the buddist temple.

Yes,that's what I meant by retraining. You could max the unit to full strength somewhere else and then retrain them again in a +3a +3w province.
That they keep their old equipment when normally retrained should not be surprising, but I suppose the new men in that unit won't have the same upgrades, thus, the symbols you see get inreasingly inaccurate the more you retrain them in less developed provinces...
However, I can't remember that retraining a unit that had a multiple turn buildtime initially takes that long again. All retrainings are made within one turn no matter what, as far as I could remember.

That is not the case. I discussed this some time back in the entrance hall: Rebuilding Damaged Units. Weapons and armour upgrades are kept track for a unit, nor for individual soldiers.

This could very well be true because I haven't tested it. I just read it somewhere.

Aha, thanks for the clarification How did you verify it? Logfile?

Verify what? You mean armour / weapons being kept track of on unit basis?
Ehh... You know, I've forgoten it.
Not from the logfile certainly, since I don't work with these things. I must have picked it up somewhere, probably on this forum. So if you want to check my statement, ask Aymar de Bois Mauri.
