Thread: Shields

Just thought I'd clear up one of my personal confusions about the game. How exactly do shields work? My current understanding is that their bonus, either .5 or 1 or 2, is added to armor and/or defense, the first being for missile protection and the second for melee protection, but the melee only works when they are facing the enemy head on. Do they also have to be facing archers to get the shield bonus to armor? And what if the unit turns around after being flanked, when do the shield melee bonuses kick in? Not a really important thing, I just want to know if having a large shield is even close to as good as 2 extra points in defense and/or armor.

someone said that if you attack behind a large (+2) shield unit, you get +2 attack bonus (your enemy don't lost shield bonus but you get att. bonus). No mention of bonus in side attack.

In another test, the archers shoot effective to the back of their targets.

So I think shield add bonus to armor and defense, in front and sides. Very good And this +2 bonus don't give the armor piercing enemy unit a + 1 attack as body armor

    Kaboom is perfectly right.

But I will try to make it more clear.

Indeed you do get a bonus attacking into the rear of an enemy with shields. The flanks are still a bit unknown, but since many flanking attacks (on individual level) becomes fights head on or rear attacks then you can safely assume that the shield is there in some degree.

The shield's effectiveness are deternimed on an individual level. Meaning each soldier is dertermined if his shield is facing the enemy.

The bonus of the shield can only give +1 or +2 to defense, but can give 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 to armour depending on type and modifier. That armour gained thus are free, in that AP weapons don't get a bonus against them. So AP weapons only give +1 against MAAs and JHIs despite the armour saying it is 5 for all of them (and thus should have given +2).
But AP from ranged weapons count shield as normal armour so far I have understood.
