Im new to all this, and you guys seem to be right into it... anyway, im wondering if you guys always save it or use autosave right before decisive battles and such, and load it when things go wrong, or just play the game thru to victory or defeat no matter what happens..

so far i been loading it and i dont think ive fought a losing battle yet.. kinda sux i think im gonna start new and not load anything.. i guess that way i will really have to think about what im doing..

and are u guys like full pro at controlling battles, like beating larger and better equipped armies with clever tactics? cuz im so crap and when its evenly matched i always come off worse..sometimes using autocalculate gives me a better chance of winning

Never autocalc Legion and after a couple of months you will wonder why you ever felt the need.

The more of your own battles you fight the better you will become untill you think nothing of attacking the computer when you're outnumbered 3:1. You can even try some custom battles to try new tactics without spoiling your campaign.

Failing this try MP, playing online is much harder but if you ask the people there will be more than happy to pass on tips and share their experience. If you feel like trying it I will be online in about 4 hours and can show you the basics, then you can play some real players

When I just started I used to always save at every given opportunity, but while it makes the game more challenging if you don't, it is a good way to learn from mistakes.

    Anyway, enjoy the game

Well, I always autosave, only because I historically had problems with MTW crashing to the desktop when it was switching from 2D to 3D. As far as reloading lost battles and such - it did not happen since I stopped playing on EASY....

welcome to the org Legion. I usually used auto-calc because I was a terrible general - still am with seiges so I still auto-calc them. But as Ja'chyra said try battles in a custom game to get used to the units and develop some good tactics and formations.

Hy LegionOfSteel, I autosave at every ocasion before battles(sometimes just happen to quit in the middle of a battle to go out, or just get plain bored), but this when I'm attacking, if I'm defending I play it through. I never load because of strategical/management mistakes, what is done is done.

Check this poll I started recently, Do you reload?.

As for the battles, I wasn't very good at it at the very beginning too, and I still make mistakes from time to time, but I don't reload, I treat the game as the life itself. Yes, perhaps somewhat radical, but that's just me. Last time I fought the Hungarians I was maneuvering my quality superior army, and while I was conducting some pretty snazzy total army movements, my left flank got too close to the Hungarians and their cavalry attacked my arquebusiers. That raised my total casualties for some 150 men total, but I didn't reload. It just happens. Oh, yes, I won at the end, so it didn't matte much anyway, I guess.

I save, but never reload because of lost battles. That's just part of the campaign, and I need to have a better army next time.

I used to play wargames on a table with hills, trees, houses and all that and the battlefield on MTW is the equivalent of this.

Good tactics, e.g. prudent use of archers, calvary and spearmen, swordsmen can win the battle even when the odds are more than 3:1 or even 10:1 if in defence.

I always quicksave. But on the odd occasion that I need to use it, I'm usually locked in a hopeless struggle(eg 750 byz vs. 2000+ turks mostly siphis)

I quicksave very often for bug reasons. I usually do not reload, & try to repair my mistakes.....

I usually autocalc easy wins. I see no point in advancing & crushing a weak enemy. More difficult attacks or defences I usually do play.

Note though that defend with 800 average danes versus 800 Byz including 240 Varangians is not a win in my book. I focus my attention in destroying the Varangians(in order to reduce their numbers next time), but usually at the cost of the victory. Blocking them with noblespearmen(not sure of the exact name in english), flanking them with vikings or Clansmen, charging their rear with cavalry, & they're done... but kill 200 before dying. So my army is exterminated, but its loses its elite units, & counter-attack is usually definitive. Autocalc would not deplete Varangians enough to my taste.

I auto-save at the end of every year. No fun playing for hours and having a CTD
