King Succesion and Faction Eliminating

Usually I train my assasin?s as much as I can. There are lot emisary around, princes, bishops and alims that are annoying me al the time. So my cleaners have lot of stars. Mostly from 5 to 7.

When they have enough stars to kill the faction king, of course if there is no border fort, I do that with smile on my face.

But what happened

Example: I kill the king. He doesn?t have any heir, and I receive notice, people elect new one. So when I kill second one I receive note, faction eliminated.
Why this happened?

If I kill their king in the battle and he?s the last one, faction is immediately eliminated.

What?s wrong?

Were they the same faction? The German HRE always just re-elects a new King, iirc.

Yes, the first time happened to HRE, also with Scots in Russian Expansion mode.

HRE and the Papacy cannot be eliminated in this way.
