Been playing MTW today, I'm playing as HRE and the Golden Horde have just arrived, they destroyed the turks in Khazar and have started pushing into my territory in Kiev etc. anyway I had two huge climactic battles, roughly 4000 men per side per battle, I lost the first (but took a lot with me) and won the second, but straight after them my computer crashed No chance to save or anything I'm so annoyed

Just thought I'd vent my frustration.

It happens to me when i spend a lot of time on the battlemap. Then i hit Esc and go to save *crash* i find myself staring at my desktop, a nice painting of Gondolin, but not what i want to see at the time. What you do is before hitting Esc, hit ctrl+S for a quicksave. if you do that then hit esc and you crash, your game will have saved under the Quicksave slot so you can load it up and save it properly before moving on.

I got 2 major pbls with the game on My 1st comp.
1st (besides the known bug with quick save before battles).
If I stay on the strategic map without saving for more than 3 rounds I cdt as soon as I hit escape.
2nd - sometimes comp took more than 2 h before stop thinking.
My 1st comp specs: Amd 3.0 barton, 1 gigaddram, ati 9800 pro with latest 4.1 ati drivers, winxp rpo with sp 1 and latest patches.
Now the funny part. On My 2nd comp I got 4 installs of Mtw +vi +p1.02, each 1 for a mod.
And I didnt get any pbl besides downgrading the Nvidia drivers to 40.42, as game refused to start with 44.33.
But no cdt when on strategic map, nor long time wainting.
My 2nd comp specs: Amd 2.0 athlon, 512 ddram, nvidia ti4600 and win98se.
Cnat understand why a comp older and with worse specs can run game better, lol.

At a quick glance for all your problems, a lot of the time it seems to be graphics card/ graphics driver related. In other words when you are switching between:

main menu/strat map/battle map, you are changing graphical modes (between openGL, direct 3d, direct draw(2D), also you may have different setup in terms of screen resolution, colours refresh rate etc. etc.)

the crash in that case will almost always be down to graphics drivers, so if you are having problems, try downloading and installing the latest versions from http://www.ati.com or http://www.nvidia.com depending on your graphics card flavour. If you still have problems, install the drivers that came on the disk with your card and see if these work better.

actually, it never surprises me when someone says 'my game works better on a win98 machine than it does on a winxp machine'.

if you've ever bothered to read any readme files that come with games, they almost say somewhere in there to 'turn off all background taskes'. well, guess what, winxp runs over 50 of these on a stock xp home version, and more than that on an xp pro version duh

xp is a hog. a large, fat, hungry hog. it eats resources like a hungry hog at the slophouse. you need to trim the fat on this beast. there are many, many things in xp that just dont need to be there, or at least dont need to be turned on all the time. go to http://www.blackviper.com to learn what and how to turn off.

there's lots of common things you can also turn off, like some of those oddball things sitting in your systray and there's always the anti-virus, instant messengers, firewalls and so on. now, if yer playing multi, you do want to leave your firewall on, but for single player, there's not nearly as much reason. turn this stuff off

    trim the beast

Yeah I sorted my system out good en proper, I had about 19 processers running in task manager, 15 of them were useless and when I disabled them, I got a MASSIVE performance increase.

I also dont have anything running in system tray either.

I dread to think what the avergae Joe has running while they play games: MSN messanger, Kazaa, IRC, anti-virus, ect ect
