I realize they're hardcoded, but is there anyway to get rid of them altogether? Using the bif folders that were causing problems I can make units for old factions but the ones for my new factions don't work (CTD while loading), even though I got rid of the facshield units from the folder. In this particular case it's the ChainHlm folder. Because I have a duplicate custom folder, I removed the shields and drew in new ones. I removed the Feudal Foot Knight and Feudal Man at Arms, the FacShield units. Chernigov Infantry and Hungarian Foot Knights worked for Russia and Hungary, but Gotland Militia did NOT work for Sweden. So I went into Battle/FacShields and first of all made a back up of the text document 'd' into the main MTW folder and deleted both Feudal units from the original. Then I made copies of both Feudal units into the MTW main folder before deleting both Low and High res versions of them. Yet still the problem persists

Is it possible? Do I have to get rid of them completely?

    Thanks,
    BKB

I think getting rid of them is not a bad idea. Only the royal units should have royal coat of arms on their shields I think, other units like FMAA or CMAA or so, they could get some plain shields.

I would disable all those faction shields by first changing their coordinates in a .BIF so they cover only 4 x 4 pixels (in _H.BIFs), and then just make units not use those tiny shields, make them some new.

I don't think d.txt has anything to do with wether an unit has faction shields. I once did a test and removed all the entries and still the faction shields were displayed.

For ME:TW I had first made the Uruk-Hai use a BIF that originally had some units who used facshields. Even the Pikemen who do not have a shield have pieces of factionshields hovering around them. There are no shields coordinates written for the Pikemen, yet the facshields are still visible. Damn you CA OOooh, blasphemy

I think they are hardcoded to the bone, and if I were you I wouldn't bother with them, as they are difficult to understand. For ME:TW we will replace all facshields with completely green images so that even if M:TW decides to place them over the unit then they will be invisible.

    Hope this helped a bit,
    Duke John

SO even if I reposition the weapons so that they go over the old facshield bifs and then draw the new shields in the old weapons spots I will still have problems?

There's one thing that bothers me: I replaced the Janissary Heavy Infantry shield with a new one for my Gotland Militia in the ChainHlm folder. When I loaded a battle with them for Sweden the game CTD. Then I tried them with the Danes and it worked. I thought it must have been only the new factions who had the problem. So I made a new shield for Byzantine Spearmen (skutakoi - sp?) where the FFK one was and that didn't work either If it's a problem with just the facshields bif coordinates, why did the Janissary Heavy Infantry shield coordinates cause problems?

Just when I thought I was getting somewhere
