After repeated emphatic denials from CA, I was shocked and pleased to read in the Coliseum that there is likely to be an option for multi-player campaigns in RTW.

However, on reflection, I wonder what the implications of this decision are for the PBM type games we have going here?

Unfortunately, they don't look good to me.

Firstly, I have no interest in MP battles. Never tried them, but they don't appeal - I doubt I'd cope without a pause button Auto-resolving also doesn't appeal - I love battling the AI

Secondly, I am not keen on competing with others - I like the cooperative aspect of PBM games as they are. I don't want to be rushed or rush others. I like competing against the AI, but am not attracted to competing against real people. I do like role-playing, but I am not sure how much opportunity there will be for that.

Thirdly, the MP campaign will kind of rule out the story-telling stuff we do here in our write-ups and that is half the fun for me.

Maybe we could still continue the kind of games we play here, but I wonder if there will be enough interest now that people have proper MP campaigns available?

The only positive aspect is that playing a campaign with my son will be feasible and that would be great fun.

    Anyone got any thoughts?

PBM shall remain, for certain. I've been reading those marvellous stories ever since June, and won't regret that time I put aside from my other interests to check out the newest stories.

    Let's start a new campaign:

I'll still be interested in PBM-style games, since I don't have internet access at home.

Oh well, looks like we don't need to worry - Captain Fishpants just confirmed that there will be no MP campaign in RTW.

To be honest, in my opinion it's a pity that there will be no MP campaign.

I don't think a MP campaign would get in the way of PBM playing. Its just two different types of games.

Although I quite like MP games myself, I know there are a lot of people who don't like competitive gaming against other human players. I am sure there would still be enough interest in PBM games even if the option of an MP campaign was there.

Now here is another thought :
Cooperative MP games against the AI. That would be nice

That'd be so sweet, especially a GA-style game.

I did that a few times in Civ II when I was teaching a friend of mine how to play more effectively: stuck the game on emperor level where he'd normally get creamed and then got the two of us to play cooperatively in a space race.

I think they should do a Multiplayer Campaign, but limit the number of players to keep turn times down... Maybe only Four Players max per campaign
