Thread: Troop movement

Is there a way to queue up movement for my armies? I'd like them to go to a specific province 2 away. I don't want to move them twice.

If this feature is not available will it be with R:TW?

    Thanks

If I got you correctly, there is such a feature in MTW, just I am not sure whether it comes with Viking invasion or not. Say you got an army in Muscovy, when you drag and drop it onto Crimea, that army moves until it arrive to Crimea. So yes, there is such a feature.

if you don t mind which prov they pass through, just drop the unit on the target province - I have heared that you can t do that with crusades/jihads but never checked. You can do it with agents but you have to watch if the shortest route to target goes through a foreign provice - I lost a couple of spies/assasins that way.

crusades and jihads don't automove and armies only automove if the target belongs to you IIRC.

How does it determine what provinces to move through? What if I want to move to a city with a port and travel overseas. Does it do that?

Guess I have some things to try tonight.

AI picks the shortest route, whether it's by land or by sea.

Same thing with crusades, only you have to manually move it along the prespecified shortest route.

Yeah, agents are annoying in that they often move into enemy territory. Thus, I never automove with spies or assassins.

you can go to the shorter route any time whether it is by land or by sea.

thus, if province A is closer by land and province B is closer by sea, then it's possible to flip back and forth between the two provinces, sucking up troops provided it's high zeal.

AI crusades can go backwards etc. as long as it arrives in fewer turns than longest route.

hence, with shipping lanes open, it can flip back and forth like crazy since it would still be faster than land route.

An army will only automove to a province if it can get there through your ships or provinces.

Yes, but IIRC, when you do that, the army/agent actually chooses where to move at the end of turn, although the position changes to indicate it's moving - so it may not be obvious whether it is or not unless you pay attention.

I have nevber seen this work. I simply cannot move any units armies or crusades to any destination other than one they can reach directly. non-immediate provinces simply will not accept the army stack being dropped. Is there a switch or some other methodology used?

It takes multiple turns and I only managed to get it to work through my provinces to my province.

this occasionally doesn't work and I prefer manual for armies

The army stack will stay in it's original province however the icon will change to a soldier standing up (like the emsiarries (sp?))

If the province highlights yellow then you can drop the army there and it will start to automove from it's current province at the end of the turn.

In Shogun your army gets a nice little blue arrow highlight under it showing not just that its moving somewhere else but in which direction :D

Its really odd that it was never implemented in Medieval & one of those little things that makes me still think Shogun is the better game.

Fairly often there are several different shortest routes & in this case the game will seemingly select randomly from them, such that multiple individual units sent from one province to another one will wind up taking significantly different routes.
maybe those guys should be doing something more useful...

I'm not sure if this is working for me. I tried it but I swear the armies don't move. I wish there was a way to see where they are headed. It would be cool to click on the army and see an arrow showing it's path.

hmm, maybe try right clicking the stack?

perhaps there is destination thing just like jihad an crusade markers.

haven't tried this BTW, just a random hunch.

    katank,

I just checked and could not find any destination information on an automoving stack, but maybe because I just moved for a short distance. The target province was also not highlighted when selecting the unit - would have been a nice feature to add

@sirosis - your unit does not move imedeately, but when the AI moves after you end year - maybe thats why you are not seeing it. Also you have to select a valid target province (the yellow highlighted ones) and you cannot attack with an automoving stack (ie dropping it on an enemy held province). What could also be is that mods interfere somehow.

yeah, I think it only works reliably for to your own province through your own provinces.

so much for my quick hunch then. The game has so many undocumented features though that makes it quite fun.
