    Talking

    Don't know if this has been posted before, but I've noticed that there is a small mistake in the Default_heroes.txt file...

    When playing a campaign with the Byzantines, I found out that the Sicilian kings (who I was constantly in war with) all had some very strange names (Adam, Aed, Aodh and Angus). Checked the internet on Sicilian history and found out that Sicilian kings were mostly named Roger, William or Charles.

    Then I checked the Default_heroes.txt to find the problem, and I saw this thread:
    SET_FORENAMES:: FN_SICILIAN 14 13

    Forenames list 14 = Scottish names. This explained those weird names.
    14 should be replaced by 4, as this seems to be the Sicilian forenames list.

    A small change for a historically more accurate MTW

    I find it nicer battling with (or against) a Norman King William, rather than with a Aed III...

    cheers

    that's true. it's semi historically accurate that you start with two baruqes though as that's what the normans would have in MTW instead of galleys or dromons.

    Thanks for the fix. I have actually had some people try to defend the current name list as historical and claim that it was an intentional addition to VI when I asked how to change it. Very strange that. I'll be correcting mine immediately.

    strange, dont see the importance, even if its a carbon copy of the historical state from when u begin, the moment u progress, you alter the so called 'history', so then why oh why, i'm not sure if it could ever be 'accurate' from the start of here or there anyway, but hey, i do love this game

    They are just names.. I mean I've changed the names my self to my liking. like adding my own last name into the group.. they are just names... not a big deal.
    Today is your final day...

    you're right, it's not important, but I find it more fun when it's historically (more) correct.
    I wouldn't like the english king in the game be named Vladimir I either.

    Oh well, in the end everyone does with the names what he/she likes, isn't it?

    It is important to me because it aids in the suspension of disbelief for the purpose of enjoying the game. Thanks again tricky lady. I don't think either of us need to apologize for wanting a more enjoyable gaming experience.

    You can't talk about historical correctness in mtw. Look at lithuania, they are rebels with russian names. If makers of this had any idea about lithuania in medieval times, they would never make them as a rebels, coz probably they was one of the most expansionist country in europe in those times, and at the same time had to withstand crusades of teutons into they own country. And it was battle of Tanenberg wich finally stopped german invasion to east. And it was won by VYTAUTAS THE GREAT

    Your right abaut that. That im making a 31 faction mod with all the bigger nations in europe. I am still using the russian names for the all but the kings. I have added some kings who were lithuanian heros. Its allso funny that the livonia and lithuania are orthodox and not pagan.

    actually, the sicilian name thing is fairly easy to fix.

    the lithuania and livonia thing is harder to fix. activating their faction and giving them an orthodox tech tree similar to the russians shouldn't be too hard although having the starting religion ratios different is difficult.

    Anyone have ideas on how to edit the ratio of catholic/muslim/orthodox/pagan for a province at the start of the game and zeal levels?

    The thing with names from the medieval period is anyways somewhat strange. (not just in MTW but in general)

    I really wonder why names of medieval people are allways translated into a name of your own language.

    An English Henry is called Heinrich in German history books while a German Heinrich is called Henry in English ones.... err...

    Frederick Barbarossas name is in German historybooks Friedrich, in Italian books Frederico.

    Lois the German is called in German hsitorybooks Ludwig, not Lois. well, both isnt his correct name. His true name was Ludhuvics.

    Anyone has an idea why thsoe names are translated, while, say 19th century or 20th century names arent?

    I mean, who calls Willhelm II. William II.
    Or Heinz Guderian Henry Guderian ;)

    It's a bad custom, one reminiscent of old times.

    I've been reading a multi-volume English history published in 1905, in which the German Duke is Henry and the French king is Lewis.

    It has been more or less abandoned --thankfully. But it's continued (especially in English and French writing/speaking) applied to Latin names. I searched the web for a list of Roman emperors. Found hundreds of them but all with anglicized Hadrian sort of nomenclature.

    What's even weirder is that, while Latin names are anglicized, Greek ones are latinized. Have a look at the Byzantine names in MTW... That has its roots in the Humanist tradition and even earlier. But in those times everything was latinized, not only Greek.

    If a certain custom of an influential Western country is adopted in a recessive non-Western country,it makes things even more complicated;

    Ottoman intelligency had been under heavy French influence from early 19th century well until 1950s, when it was replaced with the American one. In that period, French writing and pronounciation of both historical and contemporary names have dominated the language(s). Today, we name many countries in French fashion. Even some native nomanclature for countries and peoples have been altered.

    Personally, I pay maximum attention to preserving the authentic usage but then I'm neither a historian nor a game developer; just a poor musician that loves and maniacly plays games.
